Episode 9 recap: Yan Lin discovered that the Xue family was keeping private soldiers.
Jiang Xue Ning questioned Xie Wei, asking if he was targeting the Yan family with his actions. Xie Wei didn't know how to explain it to her but made it clear that he would not do anything to harm the Yan family. When Jiang Xue Ning returned home, she unexpectedly saw Yan Lin and happily ran over to her. However, Yan Lin seemed like a different person and treated her with extreme coldness.
Xie Wei noticed that Jiang Xue Ning was outside the door, so he put away the dagger. Jiang Xue Ning questioned Xie Wei about the identity of Gong Yi Cheng and whether he was targeting the Yan family with his actions. Xie Wei didn't know how to explain it to her but made it clear that he hadn't done anything to harm the Yan family.
While the two were talking, the kitten in Jiang Xue Ning's arms suddenly meowed. Xie Wei got startled and accidentally hit the cat, causing its claws to scratch Jiang Xue Ning's hand, leaving a few blood marks. Jiang Xue Ning discovered that Xie Wei was afraid of cats and couldn't help but tease him a bit.
The next day in class, Mr. Wang from Hanlin Garden, worried that Xie Wei's teachings would offend Duke Dingguo, discussed with another teacher and decided to change the lesson content to the virtues of a chaste woman. While Mr. Wang was giving the lecture, Jiang Xue Ning couldn't stand it anymore and exclaimed how disgusting it was before walking out of the classroom.
After Xie Wei arrived, he asked everyone to throw away the teachings about being a chaste woman. Lin Zi Wang, Shen Jie, was Emperor Shen Lang's younger brother and later became the emperor himself. Because Shen Lang's health was poor, the Empress Dowager wanted Shen Jie to become the Crown Prince and eventually take Shen Lang's place. However, Shen Jie was not interested in this matter, and seeing Shen Jie's irresolute attitude, the Empress Dowager couldn't help but scold him.
After leaving the Empress Dowager, Shen Jie happened to encounter Shen Zhi Yi. Shen Zhi Yi wanted her brother to come into her room for a while. In the process of pulling each other, a handkerchief fell out of Shen Jie's sleeve. Xue Shu believed that the reason Shen Jie refused was because of Jiang Xue Ning's influence. So she went to Mr. Wang and told him about Xie Wei instructing them to throw away their books. She also claimed that Jiang Xue Ning had spoken ill of Xie Wei. After hearing this, Mr. Wang decided to find a way to drive Jiang Xue Ning away.
During the next class, Mr. Wang deliberately made Jiang Xue Ning recite the teachings about being a chaste woman. Since Jiang Xue Ning couldn't remember them, he used a ruler to repeatedly hit the palms of her hands until they turned red. Shen Zhi Yi was outraged and went to the Empress Dowager to have Mr. Wang expelled. When she arrived at the Empress Dowager's place, she saw Xue Shu circling around Shen Jie. She asked Xue Shu if she had forgotten what Mr. Wang had taught in class, that men and women should not be too familiar with each other. She also mentioned that women should not participate in politics. Thinking that Mr. Wang had secretly criticized her, thanks to Xue Shu's reminder, the Empress Dowager suppressed her anger. She remembered that Mr. Wang had suggested making Shen Jie the Crown Prince.
Shen Zhi Yi unintentionally resolved the situation for Shen Jie. Shen Jie and Yan Lin had always had a good relationship. After leaving the palace, he took Yan Lin hunting. On their way back, Yan Lin unexpectedly saw Duke Dingguo, Xue Yuan, leading a group of people into a forest. She pretended to have lost something and asked Shen Jie to leave first while she went to take a look. She was surprised to discover that Xue Yuan was keeping a large number of private soldiers there.
After Yan Lin returned, she told her father about this. Yan Mu was also shocked and suspected that the weapons used by those private soldiers were leaking out of the military camp. He went to the camp to investigate and found that many weapons were indeed missing. Jian Shu mentioned Yan Lin's multiple trips into the mountains, so Xie Wei called Yan Lin over to remind her. When Yan Lin entered Xie Wei's room, she unexpectedly found Jiang Xue Ning's qin (musical instrument), the same qin that Yan Lin had bought for her. Seeing the qin, Yan Lin couldn't help but feel jealous. She asked Xie Wei to take care of Jiang Xue Ning.
Miss Baoying read Jiang Xue Ning's fortune and found out that she had recently offended someone petty. Jiang Xue Ning thought that the petty person was Xie Wei. Therefore, after class, when she heard that Xie Wei wanted her to come over, she thought there might be trouble. To her surprise, Xie Wei just wanted her to fetch the qin.
When Jiang Xue Ning went to fetch the qin, Xie Wei considerately applied medicine to her hand. Jiang Xue Ning didn't expect that this bad person, Xie Wei, would have such a gentle side. As she was leaving, she intentionally imitated a cat's meow. Seeing Xie Wei's startled reaction, she happily told him that they were even now.
