Episode 4 recap: Lian Man Er and Shen Nuo make their first fortune.

Currently, the total amount of money in the family is only forty taels. Lian Man Er's grandfather wants to sell the land, but Aunt Er is the first to disagree. She mentions that Big Uncle should be responsible for supporting the family, but he hasn't done anything yet and now they want to sell the land. Lian Man Er suggests borrowing money from Uncle Jin, and her grandfather agrees.

Shen Nuo mentions this to Lian Man Er and emphasizes the importance of who puts their fingerprint on the agreement. If it's Lian Man Er's grandfather, and Lian Hua Er can't repay the money, then the entire Lian family will have to help repay it.

Lian Man Er agrees with Shen Nuo's reasoning. The next day, Lian Man Er goes to Aunt Er and explains that their family hasn't officially divided their assets yet. If their grandfather borrows money, it should be considered as the entire family borrowing money. If Lian Hua Er marries into the Song family, she becomes a member of the Song family. If the Song family borrows money, why should the entire Lian family be responsible for repaying it?

Aunt Er becomes anxious upon hearing this and quickly goes to see Lian Man Er's grandfather. Just as he was about to put his fingerprint on the agreement, Aunt Er insists that Lian Hua Er should be the one to do it. She doesn't want their entire family to bear the burden. Lian Hua Er promises that she will definitely repay the money. Lian Man Er suggests that if she will repay it, then Lian Hua Er should put her fingerprint on the agreement.

Big Uncle tries to stop them, but Uncle Jin points out that Big Uncle was supposed to be the head of the family. Lian Man Er's grandfather is also unhappy with him. With no other choice, Lian Hua Er puts her fingerprint on the agreement.

Lian Man Er takes Shen Nuo and Xiao Qi to harvest firethorns, but the work doesn't earn much money, and Shen Nuo looks down on it.

Lian Man Er explains that it's just a temporary solution. She suggests that Shen Nuo can write letters on behalf of others, given his appearance, there will surely be many young ladies who would want him to write letters for them. Shen Nuo refuses. Lian Man Er mentions that Shen Nuo spent the one hundred taels that she brought back from the Sun family, so he should repay her.

Shen Nuo goes to find Shi San and discovers that he has been detained by the theater troupe. Shen Nuo gets into a fight with the troupe leader, Yu Xiang Jin, and wants to take Shi San away. Yu Xiang Jin demands two hundred taels, and Shen Nuo agrees, saying he will come back to redeem Shi San in a month.

Shen Nuo asks Shi San about the situation, and Shi San reveals that he saw the person who was eavesdropping on them during the play. It was the owner of Yuelai Restaurant, but he hasn't found out more details yet.

Shen Nuo asks Shi San to continue gathering information there. Shen Nuo sets up a stall across from the restaurant and writes letters. Many girls come to him to have love letters written and read aloud.

Coincidentally, Lian Man Er sees this and claims it was her idea. She insists that if Shen Nuo makes money, he should split it with her. Lian Man Er organizes everyone into a queue, assuring them that everyone will get their turn. In the evening, Lian Man Er and Shen Nuo divide the earnings. Lian Man Er asks Shen Nuo why he changed his mind, and Shen Nuo explains that a fellow townsman of his has been detained, and he wants to earn money to ransom him.

Lian Man Er thinks Shen Nuo is a person with emotions and principles, so she gives him a little extra. Lian Man Er buys a hairpin for her mother, who is delighted. Lian Hua Er happens to see Lian Man Er returning with a bulging money bag.

The next day, Lian Man Er comes early to call Shen Nuo to set up the stall, but to their surprise, many people have imitated them, and there is no space left. Shen Nuo suggests taking Lian Man Er to the restaurant, which makes Lian Man Er very happy. While Shen Nuo seizes the opportunity to go upstairs and eavesdrop, he overhears the boss and others talking. The others mention that everything has been arranged.

The boss has a ledger in his hands and warns that if something goes wrong, they won't be able to escape. Lian Man Er's grandfather sends Lian Man Er to Uncle Jin's house to deliver mooncakes. Upon arriving, Lian Man Er learns that Wang You Heng has gone to collect debts and rushes over to join the commotion, only to find Wang You Heng helping someone with their work.

Lian Man Er takes the money back from Wang You Heng, realizing that their family does have some money. Wang You Heng explains that the family's elderly mother is seriously ill, and these things were borrowed just to let her leave peacefully. The money Lian Man Er brought might even be the funeral expenses for the elderly mother.

Lian Man Er returns the money and even contributes ten wen.
