Episode 1 recap: Don't be afraid. I'll take you out.
In August 2014, a fire broke out in a residential building in the Binxian District of Beixun City, rapidly engulfing the entire structure. The number of trapped individuals inside was unknown. Nan Chu, a student, was trapped in her home, waiting for rescue that seemed out of reach. At the moment when she was about to lose consciousness, a firefighter broke down the door and saved her from the fire. The firefighter's words, "Don't be afraid, I'll take you out," left a lasting impression on her.
On August 3, 2014, a 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck Minshi County in Beixun City, with Jingde Middle School at the epicenter. Meng Guo Hong, the leader of the Special Operations Brigade of the Beixun City Public Security Fire Brigade, led his team to Minshi County to conduct search and rescue operations at Jingde Middle School. Just as the fire brigade arrived and was about to begin the rescue operation, another aftershock occurred, causing widespread collapse of the building and making the rescue operation even more challenging.
After the aftershock subsided, the Special Operations Unit entered Jingde Middle School to carry out the rescue. Qin Shi Quan regained consciousness at the collapsed site and called out to Shao Shi Jiu, encouraging each other and waiting for rescue. Four hours after the earthquake, Lin Lu Xiao discovered Qin Shi Quan and Shao Shi Jiu and was preparing to rescue them when Yu Qi Lei, a structural engineer who happened to be there on a business trip, appeared and offered to assist in the rescue.
With Yu Qi Lei's help, Lin Lu Xiao successfully rescued Qin Shi Quan and Shao Shi Jiu using Yu Qi Lei's suggested method. However, the rescue operation was far from over. Ten hours after the earthquake, heavy rain fell in Minshi County, temporarily halting the search and rescue operations. During the break, while the team rested, Lin Lu Xiao heard a child singing. He joined his teammates in continuing the search and rescue operation without any equipment, determined to save as many people as possible.
One by one, Lin Lu Xiao and his team rescued people, enduring for 38 hours. They saved many lives, but the child who was singing remained trapped, with his voice continuously heard. Finally, Lin Lu Xiao and his team got closer to the source of the singing. They were able to communicate with the child, asking him to continue singing to help them locate his position and facilitate the rescue.
Lin Lu Xiao went in to rescue the singing child, but the child had been impaled by steel bars. Lin Lu Xiao had to cut off the excess steel bars in order to save the child. Just as Lin Lu Xiao was cutting the steel bars, an aftershock occurred. The teammates outside who were providing support had to pull Lin Lu Xiao out, but he struggled and didn't want to give up on the child. Lin Lu Xiao's actions almost endangered the other teammates, and he was criticized by the team leader. However, he couldn't let go of the fact that he couldn't save the child and carried a heavy burden in his heart.
48 hours after the earthquake, when Liu Jianfei was resting, he comforted Lin Lu Xiao, making him understand that the job of a firefighter is a race against time. They don't have time to dwell on their emotions, so he encouraged him to regain his composure. Meng Guo Hong came to boost everyone's morale and reminded them that the critical 72-hour period had not yet passed, urging them to continue their efforts to save lives.
After the earthquake rescue work was completed, Meng Guo Hong specifically held a meeting for the firefighters involved in the search and rescue operation to address their thoughts. Lou Ming Ye and Lin Lu Xiao had a dispute during the rescue process due to their differing philosophies. Meng Guo Hong criticized both of them and urged them to reflect deeply. Lou Ming Ye believed that Lin Lu Xiao was too impulsive and lacked professionalism during the rescue operation, and he couldn't approve of Lin Lu Xiao's approach. Lin Lu Xiao believed that their duty was to protect people's safety, and if they couldn't risk their lives to save others, how could they save more people?
After reflecting on his actions, Lin Lu Xiao went to visit Xu Jianfei, who sacrificed himself during the earthquake rescue. At that moment, Nan Chu, who had been rescued from a fire scene, also came to the fire station in search of the firefighter who had saved her from the inferno, firefighter 1120. Unaware that Lin Lu Xiao had mistakenly worn Xu Jianfei's uniform that day, Nan Chu received the news at the fire station that the person who saved her had died. Overwhelmed with sadness, Nan Chu left the fire station, coincidentally passing by Lin Lu Xiao who was also leaving with a heavy heart. They were strangers to each other and had no means of contact.
Four years later, a solemn ceremony was held for the flag presentation and uniform change of the Beihun City Fire Rescue Brigade. Lin Lu Xiao was among them, and after the solemn oath, the powerful fire rescue team was established. In 2019, as a member of the Peace Road Special Operations Station, Lin Lu Xiao was called to rescue a man who was drunk and refusing to come down from a rooftop of a building. Considering the special circumstances where they couldn't deploy the air cushion and were concerned about the man falling, Lin Lu Xiao had to go up with alcohol and tricked him into coming down.
Lin Lu Xiao successfully saved the man, but Lou Ming Ye, a police officer from the Beihun City Fire Brigade, believed that he had violated discipline and was not qualified to be selected as an outstanding station leader. Lin Lu Xiao believed that he was there to save lives and didn't care about the selection process, so he didn't mind how Lou Ming Ye wrote his report.
Huang Jing Yu continues to portray the role of a bumbling yet courageous character, and it's hard to say whether his frequent appearance in films of this genre tarnishes the image of Chinese military and police personnel.
Zhang Jing Yi is just too unattractive... However, it's not easy to adapt the original novel into this format, but if they have already made such changes to the characters, why not create an original script?
I'm currently watching the first episode, twelve minutes in, and I really need to get this off my chest. The opening scene shows the female lead weakly lying by the bed in the midst of a fire. But when she looks at the firefighter entering the room to rescue her, her eyes are so clear that I thought she was peeping instead of about to lose consciousness.
Second, during the earthquake rescue, when the structural engineer comes over and the male lead has a conversation with him, I just want to say, there are two critically endangered children waiting for you right under your feet.
Can't we have a sense of urgency? It feels like they're just having a casual chat, as if they're old buddies. Is this drama really as professional as you claim, or is it another brainless drama that uses firefighting as a backdrop for romance?
