Episode 5 recap: # Tan Lin's Confession

In Episode 5, Wang Kun Wu seeks out Yu De Shui to inquire about the wrongful accusation of treason against Wei Yunqi from years ago, hoping to uncover the details. Soon after, Yuan Mo and his men corner Steward Jiang and Hua Xiao Niang at Ruyi Tower. Panicking, Hua Xiao Niang insists that they stayed in their room that night and didn’t go anywhere.

Yuan Mo isn't convinced. He brings up a secret passage in the room and the wooden figurine found there. Upon hearing this, Steward Jiang quickly jumps in to say that it was he who divided the rooms and that he secretly used the passage to kill Dou Chun.

Yuan Mo, clever as he is, deliberately spills a cup of blood on the floor. Jiang's face turns pale, and he starts to tremble. It turns out he has been fainting at the sight of blood, something Yuan Mo already knew. This serves as solid evidence. Realizing she can no longer hide the truth, Hua Xiao Niang admits that she was the one who killed Dou Chun.

That night, Dou Chun had drunk spiked wine and was completely passed out. Taking advantage of this, Hua Xiao Niang snuck through the secret passage to his room and finished him off.

It’s revealed that Hua Xiao Niang was once a musician for the Wei family, while Steward Jiang was a servant. Wei Yunqi discovered Dou Chun's involvement in arms smuggling and sought evidence through Cao Huo. However, Dou Chun turned the tables, framing Wei Yunqi and ultimately killing him. In revenge for General Wei, Hua Xiao Niang and Jiang orchestrated everything.

They ask Yuan Mo to help clear the Wei family's name, but just then, Tan Lin arrives with soldiers, stating he's been keeping an eye on this case and takes them both away.

At dinner, A Shu is upset that Yuan Mo won't stand up for the Wei family, making it hard for him to eat. Wang Kun Wu nags about Yu Chi Hua's poor treatment of Yuan Mo, fearing the reward might be in jeopardy.

The next day, A Shu plans to accompany Yu Chi Hua shopping, while Yuan Mo asks A Shu to help retrieve the reward. Clever A Shu quickly swipes a bag of silver from Yuan Mo.

In the West Market, A Shu encounters Yu Chi Hua, who is still angry about Yuan Mo’s actions. A Shu plays a trick by having a servant deliver a large chest of silver to Yuan Mo while deliberately making it hard for the servant to help carry it. Yuan Mo has to struggle to move it himself, exhausting himself in the process. Yu Chi Hua and A Shu laugh at the description from Steward Huang.

When Yuan Mo returns home, he learns from Ji Mingli that Tan Lin often visited before Dou Chun's incident. Yuan Mo and Wang Kun Wu immediately confront Tan Lin, who confesses that he was close friends with Wei Yunqi and had written letters to expose Dou Chun, which ultimately led to Wei Yunqi’s downfall. Tan Lin hopes to redeem himself by asking Yuan Mo to clear the Wei family’s name.

Honglu Temple awards the West Courtyard of the Sifang Pavilion, bringing some glory to the East Courtyard as well; however, An Xiu Yi feels it’s charity and refuses it. Wang Kun Wu distributes the prize money among his brothers.

In the end, Yu De Shui formally invites Yuan Mo to join the Sifang Pavilion. Yuan Mo feels conflicted; having lost his parents in the desert and tirelessly seeking justice, he finds himself facing constant setbacks. Now, he only believes in money, trusting nothing else.

A Shu warns him not to throw wine bottles onto the bed, only to discover that Yu De Shui has come knocking at their door.
