Episode 12 recap: # Gu Yi Zhong Assigned to Investigate Zhou Zhi Fei

In Episode 12, Gu Yi Zhong firmly denies being Cell 8 and any murder accusations when confronted by Xiao Ruo Tong. She insists that he reveal the truth, threatening to take him to the organization if he refuses. Gu Yi Zhong stands his ground, leading to a tense standoff. At this moment, Hai Mo unexpectedly intervenes and swiftly subdues Xiao Ruo Tong. Gu Yi Zhong notices that she is showing signs of a high fever and decides to take her to the hospital. There, he has Hai Mo care for Xiao Ruo Tong while he secretly contacts the organization.

Facing pressure from the organization, Gu Yi Zhong struggles internally but ultimately chooses to honor his father's wishes. Despite his grief, he prepares to return to Task 90. Xiao Ruo Tong wakes up in the hospital, where Dr. Lu diagnoses her with malaria and administers quinine.

Upon hearing the word "quinine," she realizes its critical importance and quickly reports it to the organization. She understands that, in this time of scarce medical resources, the acquisition of quinine is vital for them. Meanwhile, Zhou Zhi Fei is burdened with heavy emotions.

He clutches a letter from You Fei, and its ten points weigh heavily on his heart. After seeing the letter, Yu Qing feels a mix of anger and sorrow. Zhou Zhi Fei is torn; he fears that You Fei will return as a stranger and worries about losing his son. He considers having another child with his wife when a crash from downstairs jolts him.

Upon learning it was just a servant's mistake, he breathes a sigh of relief. As Hai Mo bids farewell at Gu Yuan, she performs a Suzhou ballad in front of Gu Xi Xing to express her condolences. She leaves a letter for Gu Yi Zhong, gently encouraging him to embrace life again and hire help to prevent Gu Yuan from falling into disrepair.

Upon entering Task 90, Gu Yi Zhong is met by Xie Wen Chao, who urgently relays instructions from Huang Xin Zhai, directing him to Huang's office. To his surprise, he finds Kondo Masashi waiting for him there.

Kondo, clearly interested in Gu Yi Zhong's architectural knowledge, cleverly starts a conversation about a nearby bonsai tree to draw his insights. After their discussion, Kondo shifts gears and officially assigns Gu Yi Zhong the task of investigating Zhou Zhi Fei's background and activities.

This unexpected order leaves Gu Yi Zhong feeling conflicted, as he realizes he has been drawn into a more complex and dangerous situation.

Gao Hu hurriedly visits Zhou Zhi Fei to reveal that Huang Xin Zhai and Kondo Masashi have decided to move him out of Gu Yi Zhong's dormitory and terminate the surveillance on him. Upon hearing this, Zhou Zhi Fei not only refuses to comply but also warns Gao Hu to disregard Huang Xin Zhai's orders. Just as Gao Hu prepares to ask for more money, Zhou Zhi Fei is urgently called away by a sudden phone call.

Meanwhile, Quan Shui, disguised as Weng Tai Tai, quietly visits the Zhou residence. Zhou Zhi Fei, suppressing his anger, introduces her to Yu Qing. Yu Qing seems to sense something unusual in Zhou Zhi Fei's demeanor and makes an excuse to leave. However, as she turns away, Zhou Zhi Fei confronts Quan Shui, demanding to know her intentions. At that critical moment, Yu Qing suddenly returns, leading Zhou Zhi Fei into the kitchen. He mistakenly thinks they’ve been exposed, but Yu Qing merely wants to inquire about Weng Tai Tai's relationship with Li Xian Sheng.

To win Li Xian Sheng's favor, Yu Qing gladly accepts Weng Tai Tai's offer to stay. Zhou Zhi Fei notices the bracelet on Yu Qing's wrist, a gift from Quan Shui, and feels uncomfortable about such an expensive present after just meeting. However, Yu Qing knows the bracelet is of high quality and is reluctant to return it, leaving Zhou Zhi Fei with no choice but to let it go.

After calming Yu Qing's emotions, Zhou Zhi Fei enters Quan Shui's room. She gently embraces him from behind, speaking softly of their past in an attempt to evoke his sympathy. However, just as their emotions begin to heat up and they are about to lose themselves in each other's arms, Zhou Zhi Fei unexpectedly brings up a sensitive topic—whether Quan Shui had any involvement with foreigners during their mission in Hong Kong.

At this, Quan Shui's expression changes abruptly; all tenderness vanishes. She angrily pushes Zhou Zhi Fei away and demands that he leave. Meanwhile, Gao Hu is packing his belongings in the dormitory, preparing to move out as per Huang Xin Zhai's orders. Gu Yi Zhong inadvertently glances at a prescription on the table and learns that Gao Hu's mother is suffering from cholera.

Feeling compassion, he not only suggests that Gao Hu seek treatment at Zhaohe Hospital but also generously offers financial assistance for his mother’s care. Deeply moved by Gu Yi Zhong's kindness, Gao Hu kneels on the floor, tears streaming down his face as he expresses his gratitude.

At the same time, Hai Mo makes an important decision—to stay in Suzhou. She goes to a theater and impresses the owner with her exceptional musical talent. Upon learning that she is a disciple of the renowned master Zhang Yu Quan, the owner views her with newfound respect. Hai Mo sincerely requests an opportunity to perform on stage and offers to do so for free, hoping the owner will give her a chance.
