Episode 18 recap: # Gu Yi Zhong's Attempt to Save Xiao Jun Xia
In this episode, Gu Yi Zhong wants to talk to Xiao Jun Xia, but with the prison warden nearby, he has to pretend to stay calm while waiting for an opportunity. Just then, he receives a call from Xie Wen Chao, causing the warden to step away briefly. Seizing the moment, Gu Yi Zhong takes the keys and approaches Xiao Jun Xia's cell.
However, Captain Zhang and his team are hiding nearby, watching him closely. Gu Yi Zhong senses something is off and looks around, noticing some spies lurking in the shadows. Frustrated, he throws the keychain to the ground, creating a loud noise. One of the spies accidentally fires a shot. Captain Zhang is about to scold him, but Gu Yi Zhong rushes forward.
He recalls the horrific incident when Jiang Bo Xian was shot, and his emotions run high. Captain Zhang quickly orders medical assistance, and the tension escalates. Meanwhile, Quan Shui receives a mysterious phone call from someone claiming to be Mr. Shen, informing her that Jiang Bo Xian has been hospitalized.
Worried, she insists on going to the hospital immediately. However, Yu Qing, under Zhou Zhi Fei's orders, is assigned to keep an eye on Quan Shui and prevent her from leaving. Determined to see Jiang Bo Xian, Quan Shui even threatens Yu Qing with a gun, forcing her to drive her to the hospital. Reluctantly, Yu Qing complies and quickly informs Zhou Zhi Fei of the situation.
At the hospital, Quan Shui faces the spies outside, trying to fend them off, but she is ultimately stopped by Zhou Zhi Fei before she can enter Jiang Bo Xian's room. Zhou Zhi Fei warns her that both inside and outside the room are traps, and the Japanese special forces are on their way. Attempting to force her way in would be extremely dangerous, so Quan Shui reluctantly leaves the hospital.
Later, Zhou Zhi Fei visits Jiang Bo Xian and expresses admiration for his resilience. When the Japanese special forces arrive, Zhou Zhi Fei cleverly engages with them, successfully driving them away and giving Jiang Bo Xian a chance to survive.
Upon returning home, Zhou Zhi Fei confides in Quan Shui about the real reason Jiang Bo Xian came to Suzhou and sternly warns her not to act recklessly again.
Despite Quan Shui's strong will to stop Chiang Kai-shek from betraying the country, she also expresses understanding and respect for Zhou Zhi Fei's decision. Although there are some conflicts and friction between them, they maintain a delicate balance. However, with undercurrents swirling, the future remains unpredictable.
After careful consideration, Gu Yi Zhong decides to rescue Xiao Jun Xia by digging a tunnel. After reporting to his superiors and obtaining approval, he seeks Fu Gui's assistance. In response to Fu Gui's doubts, Gu Yi Zhong firmly denies any involvement in his commander’s death and explains that his mission is to aid the underground party. After hearing this, Fu Gui’s concerns are alleviated, and he praises Gu Yi Zhong as a true man's son, willingly agreeing to help.
Next, Gu Yi Zhong visits Xiao Ruo Tong to share the news that her brother is still alive. Overwhelmed with excitement and joy, tears shimmer in her eyes. Gu Yi Zhong outlines the rescue plan in detail and instructs her to meet Fu Gui the following day. After confirming Gu Yi Zhong's sincerity, Xiao Ruo Tong returns a pen to show her trust and leaves with a lightheartedness akin to a bird soaring freely.
At the agreed time and place, Xiao Ruo Tong meets Fu Gui, who has been waiting with his team. Initially, the three diggers show a dismissive attitude towards her, but with Fu Gui's support, they come to respect her ability to read maps and adjust their demeanor. Before starting work, the diggers conduct a solemn worship ceremony, which leaves Xiao Ruo Tong feeling puzzled.
However, as she observes their practical skills, she realizes Fu Gui's words are true; this team is indeed made up of experts. After Gu Yi Zhong returns to Room 90, Huang Xin Zhai privately summons him and presents information about Quan Shui. The photo shows that Quan Shui is indeed the cousin mentioned by Hai Mo.
Huang Xin Zhai reveals that Quan Shui's goal is to incite Zhou Zhi Fei to surrender, while Director Wan Li Lang has laid a trap to capture her. Just as the two are deep in conversation, they hear a faint sound outside the door; it turns out to be Xie Wen Chao, who inadvertently reveals himself while eavesdropping, and the atmosphere suddenly becomes tense.
