Episode 2 recap: # Gu Yi Zhong's Betrayal
In the second episode, Gu Yi Zhong learns of an escape plan from the New Fourth Army while on his way to execution. Upon reaching the execution ground, he witnesses his comrades bravely facing their fate. Filled with patriotic fervor, he is about to shout a rallying cry when a fellow soldier steps forward, sacrificing himself to give Gu Yi Zhong a chance to escape. Seizing the moment, Gu Yi Zhong manages to flee while the agents create chaos by pretending to open fire.
Gu Yi Zhong's father, Gu Xi Xing, feels a sense of relief upon hearing that his son is alive, but deeper worries begin to surface. As Gu Yi Zhong hovers between life and death, he is deeply saddened by the sacrifice of his comrades and vows to remember their commitment to the anti-Japanese cause and continue fighting.
Meanwhile, Huang Xin Zhai accidentally reveals to Kondo Masao that Zhou Zhi Fei intends to execute Gu Yi Zhong, sparking Kondo's intense anger. He immediately confronts Zhou Zhi Fei, demanding the release of Gu Yi Zhong. In the face of Kondo's fury, Zhou Zhi Fei remains calm and strategic, reassuring Kondo that he is merely "borrowing" Gu Yi Zhong temporarily and promises to return him unharmed. He even cites the agreement between Wang Jingwei and the Japanese military to emphasize that the Japanese should not interfere with the operations of the Suzhou intelligence station, ultimately convincing Kondo to relent.
Gu Yi Zhong's sister, Gu Hui Zhong, feels a mix of relief and concern upon hearing of her brother's escape. Analyzing the rescue operation, she suspects the enemy may have anticipated it. Her worries deepen when she learns that her husband, Hu Zhiping, is set to meet a contact known as "Eagle." To ensure Hu Zhiping's safety, Gu Hui Zhong decides to send Xiao Ruo Tong with her bracelet as a token to the meeting point.
Despite knowing the dangers of the mission, Xiao Ruo Tong is touched by Gu Hui Zhong's trust and bravely embarks on the rescue. She successfully finds Hu Zhiping and shows him the bracelet, but their whereabouts are soon discovered by the agents, leading to a fierce chase.
Using their wits and courage, Hu Zhiping and Xiao Ruo Tong manage to escape the agents. Meanwhile, Gu Yi Zhong finds his cherished handgun at home and prepares to leave. At that moment, Gu Xi Xing appears and teaches him how to shoot.
After confirming that Gu Yi Zhong could protect himself, Gu Xi Xing handed him the handgun and watched him leave.
Upon safely returning, Hu Zhiping and Xiao Ruo Tong reported to Gu Hui Zhong and Gu Xi Xing. Although Gu Xi Xing was somewhat displeased with Hu Zhiping for taking his daughter away, he ultimately chose to be forgiving and accepting. He urged Hu Zhiping to ensure the safety of Gu Hui Zhong and their unborn child. Xiao Ruo Tong decided to personally find Gu Yi Zhong to ensure his safety.
However, when the two met at the Liangyou Café as planned, they were ambushed by agents. Duan Wentao, a classmate of Liu Ge and head of the intelligence section in Suzhou, was tragically shot and killed in the chaos. Grieving the loss, Gu Yi Zhong and Xiao Ruo Tong became even more determined to fight against the enemy.
They realized that Duan Wentao might not have been the true "Eagle," and the real "Eagle" could still be lurking in the shadows. The news of Duan Wentao’s death enraged Kondo Masao, who believed it was an act of infiltration by the Communist Party. Meanwhile, Zhou Zhi Fei secretly reveled in the situation; he revealed that he had an undercover agent codenamed "Cell 8," who was responsible for the Communist Party's failures.
He planned to use "Cell 8" to eliminate the New Fourth Army's base at Taihu. Zhou Zhi Fei admitted that releasing Gu Yi Zhong was actually part of his strategy, intending to make Gu Yi Zhong a scapegoat for "Cell 8" to divert the Japanese military's attention.
In this complex struggle, Gu Yi Zhong, Xiao Ruo Tong, and others relied on their unwavering beliefs and sharp minds to continuously expose the enemy's plots and engage in life-and-death confrontations. They understood that the road ahead was fraught with thorns and danger, but they were even more aware that only by persisting in the anti-Japanese struggle could they save their country and people from dire straits.
