Episode 28 recap: Huang Qiusheng's Sacrifice

In this episode, Xiao Ye, being thoughtful, gifts Gu Yi Zhong a beautifully packaged box of sushi as a friendly gesture. Gu Yi Zhong, appreciating the gesture, reciprocates by having Hai Mo prepare some of her best pastries—delicious beyond compare! After the meal, as everyone chats, Xiao Ye expresses a keen interest in the art of ping tan (traditional storytelling).

Initially, Hai Mo is modest about her skills, but Xiao Ye’s sincerity convinces her to agree to teach him. On the way home, Gu Yi Zhong feels uneasy, thinking that Hai Mo might have accepted too easily and worries she could end up getting hurt. Meanwhile, Hai Mo seems unconcerned and drags Yu Qing and the others to play mahjong, enjoying a leisurely time.

At the mahjong table, Yu Qing casually mentions that Xie Wen Chao has gone to Shanghai. This remark pricks at Gu Yi Zhong, making him uneasy and sensing something is off. Later that night, a nightmare jolts Gu Yi Zhong awake, prompting Hai Mo to ask if he’s alright.

Just then, Captain Zhang and his team burst in, shattering the night’s calm. Gu Yi Zhong realizes that beneath their peaceful lives, there are likely hidden troubles brewing.

Meanwhile, on the other side, a major incident occurs with Lao Huang. As he’s being transported, he seizes the moment and catches the driver off guard, causing chaos. Zhou Zhi Fei, lost in thought about how to deal with Gu Yi Zhong, is suddenly interrupted by Xie Wen Chao, who hurriedly reports that Lao Huang is dead and even brings the body to the interrogation room.

Captain Zhang takes Gu Yi Zhong to identify the body. Seeing Lao Huang's lifeless form pains Gu Yi Zhong, though he manages to keep his emotions in check. Observing Gu Yi Zhong’s demeanor, Zhou Zhi Fei deliberately brings up the past between him and Lao Huang to test his reaction, pointing to the injuries on Lao Huang’s neck, hoping to catch Gu Yi Zhong off guard. However, Gu Yi Zhong smartly deflects with, “I don’t know medicine,” and coldly walks away.

Zhou Zhi Fei watches Gu Yi Zhong leave, filled with confusion. He asks Captain Zhang about Lao Huang, only to find out that Zhang didn’t know Lao Huang well and feels no loss. This leaves Zhou Zhi Fei even more puzzled, wondering why Gu Yi Zhong and Captain Zhang’s reactions are so similar. Nevertheless, he grows increasingly convinced of Gu Yi Zhong’s true identity, believing he is indeed the “lonely boat.”

Zhou Zhi Fei shared his suspicions with Li Xian Sheng, but Li Xian Sheng had his own plans. He believed that Kondo Masao's kindness towards Gu Yi Zhong might have ulterior motives and could be part of a larger scheme. He advised Zhou Zhi Fei to focus on winning over the 33rd Division and to set aside the "lonely boat" matter for now; it might be useful later.

At home, Li Xian Sheng wasn't having a peaceful time either. He and his wife were arguing again over Lv Zhu. Zhou Zhi Fei suggested sending Lv Zhu to Suzhou to avoid the heat, offering to take care of her himself. However, Zhou Zhi Fei knew well that Lv Zhu was no easy task; others had fallen into trouble because of her before.

At that moment, Yu Qing proposed a clever idea: to offload the "hot potato" that was Lv Zhu onto Gu Yi Zhong, allowing Zhou Zhi Fei to free himself up. This move was both smart and ruthless, laying the groundwork for future events.

Once in Suzhou, Lv Zhu began to hover around Gu Yi Zhong, acting cute and trying to cater to him, often saying flirtatious things that made the atmosphere feel tense. During dinner, with only a few dishes of vegetables on the table, when Gu Yi Zhong asked why, Hai Mo sourly replied that it was better to eat light. At the dance, Lv Zhu even rejected an invitation from a Japanese major, which angered him to the point of wanting to draw his gun. Fortunately, Xiao Ye showed up just in time to diffuse the situation.

Privately, Gu Yi Zhong criticized Lv Zhu for being thoughtless in her actions. Lv Zhu, not one to back down, mocked Gu Yi Zhong for lacking courage. That night, Xiao Ye visited again, expressing a desire for Hai Mo to perform ping tan for Ko Lin Nobu. Upon hearing Ko Lin’s name, Gu Yi Zhong felt a surge of excitement, seeing this as a great opportunity. Xiao Ye's arrival not only broke the night's tranquility but also brought new hope to Gu Yi Zhong.
