Episode 34 recap: # Japan's Surrender and Gu Yi Zhong's Imprisonment

In Episode 34, Hai Yan feels a pang of jealousy, realizing that Gu Yi Zhong still has feelings for Xiao Ruo Tong. In a fit of defiance, she insists on following him wherever he goes. Gu Yi Zhong, preoccupied with important matters—especially after witnessing Xie Wen Chao's kidnapping scheme—knows he must rescue anyone who is his own.

He tries to reassure Hai Yan, suggesting that Hai Mo and Jun Sheng should quietly hide in the countryside while he focuses on his urgent tasks.

Gu Yi Zhong enters Prison 90, accompanied by Captain Zhang, heading straight for the jail. However, Xie Wen Chao's men, emboldened by a deputy director's orders, block their entry. Furious, Captain Zhang slaps the table and declares that no one dares challenge the director's authority. Finally, the prison gate opens just enough for Gu Yi Zhong to ask who is inside.

At that moment, Xie Wen Chao arrives, and Gu Yi Zhong seizes the opportunity to play a game of cat and mouse using his connection with Chief Chen. Chen pretends to scold Gu Yi Zhong, successfully diverting Xie Wen Chao's attention. Gu Yi Zhong then feigns taking Chen to meet the Japanese but instead drives to the outskirts, executing a clever ruse. On the way, he informs Captain Zhang that Japan is on the verge of collapse, urging him to prepare accordingly.

Captain Zhang vows to stand by Gu Yi Zhong no matter what. After dropping off Chief Chen, Gu Yi Zhong, exhausted, returns to Gu Garden for a moment of rest, only to be confronted by Xie Wen Chao and his men. Xie fixates on Gu Yi Zhong's boots, suspecting his involvement with the Communists.

Gu Yi Zhong boldly admits it and discusses the international and domestic situation with Xie, hoping to persuade him to reconsider. However, Xie is stubborn and insists on taking Gu Yi Zhong away. Unfazed, Gu Yi Zhong leads Xie to a clock and opens its back to reveal an appointment signed by Dai Li.

Xie Wen Chao, thrown off guard, cannot determine Gu Yi Zhong's true identity. Ultimately, he opts to imprison Gu Yi Zhong while assessing the situation.

Inside the cell, Gu Yi Zhong unexpectedly reunites with his comrades from the New Fourth Army. He excitedly informs them that Japan is about to surrender and proposes a rebellion, but his comrades are skeptical. Just then, Captain Zhang bursts in with weapons, rallying to Gu Yi Zhong's call. They eliminate several guards and prepare to escape, but as they reach the entrance of Prison 90, Xie Wen Chao and Japanese soldiers block their path.

Tension mounts as both sides face off. At that critical moment, a broadcast announces Japan's surrender. The Japanese soldiers, demoralized, drop their weapons and begin to weep. Meanwhile, the Chinese celebrate their victory, and Gu Yi Zhong and his comrades seize the chance to break free, heralding a new dawn of triumph.

Gu Yi Zhong intends to find Hai Mo, but is intercepted by Japanese soldiers who inform him that Kondo Masao wishes to see him. Upon arrival, he learns that Kondo plans to commit seppuku and wants Gu Yi Zhong to be his second. Furious, Gu Yi Zhong takes the knife but resists the urge to strike Kondo down immediately, feeling he shouldn't let the scoundrel die so easily.

Just as Kondo prepares to act, an unexpected twist occurs—Kondo grabs Gu Yi Zhong's hand tightly. At that moment, Zhou Zhi Fei appears with Nationalist soldiers, capturing Kondo and announcing his intent to send him to Nanjing for trial. Gu Yi Zhong realizes that Zhou Zhi Fei has defected and now claims to be Dai Li's envoy, intent on judging him as a "traitor." Though turmoil stirs within him, Gu Yi Zhong knows he must navigate this precarious situation with caution.
