Episode 35 recap: # Gu Yi Zhong on Trial
In Episode 35, Gu Yi Zhong endures the humiliation of being paraded through the streets on his way to prison, feeling deeply hurt by the misunderstandings of the people in Suzhou. Upon arriving at Lion’s Mouth Prison, he cleverly writes a note instead of a confession, offering a large sum of money for help, and asks a guard to deliver it to Lu Zhao He. Once Lu Zhao He receives the note, he quickly takes action, using his connections through Monk Yi Ren to relay the message to the anxious Hai Mo.
Meanwhile, Hai Mo urgently contacts Luo Wu Qiang from the New Fourth Army and mobilizes all available resources, determined to rescue Gu Yi Zhong. On the other hand, Yu Qing and Zhou Zhi Fei return to Suzhou, where Zhou Zhi Fei has taken over Gu’s Garden and become a prominent figure in the Kuomintang, surrounded by piles of gifts and visitors.
Hai Mo approaches Yu Qing for help in saving Gu Yi Zhong. In her haste, she accidentally calls Zhou Zhi Fei by his old name, prompting Yu Qing to remind her that he now goes by Zhou You Ren and holds a very different status. Although Yu Qing feels a sense of loyalty and wants to assist, she is unaware of Gu Yi Zhong's situation.
Just as Hai Mo is in despair, a newspaper boy’s call catches her attention. She buys a newspaper and discovers a missing person notice that serves as a secret signal for her and the New Fourth Army. Soon after, Director Lin and Chief of Staff Chen from the New Fourth Army arrive. It turns out that Chen was involved in the plan to rescue Gu Yi Zhong that night with Captain Zhang, and because Luo was occupied, he sent them to help.
Thanks to the underground network’s efforts, they learn that Gu Yi Zhong is being held in Lion’s Mouth Prison. Disguised as a family member, Hai Mo bravely enters the prison for a visit. With the guard’s assistance, she meets Gu Yi Zhong, who is outside for exercise, filled with both worry and determination.
Meanwhile, Zhou Zhi Fei sets a trap to capture high-ranking officials from the Wang puppet regime, including Xie Wen Chao and Wang Ze Min, luring them to his home before arresting them all. He coldly states that although he accepted their money, they are all on Dai Li’s blacklist and he is powerless to help them.
With the assistance of the underground party, Hai Mo successfully meets Gu Yi Zhong and informs him that they have hired a prominent lawyer from Shanghai to defend him. However, Zhou Zhi Fei, upon learning this, becomes worried and personally visits Gu Yi Zhong in prison. He attempts to strike a deal, suggesting that if Gu Yi Zhong remains silent in court, he will negotiate for a lighter sentence. Gu Yi Zhong resolutely refuses, denouncing Zhou Zhi Fei as the true traitor.
In court, Zhou Zhi Fei falsely accuses Gu Yi Zhong of murdering the patriotic general Gu Xi Xing, causing an uproar. Although Gu Yi Zhong is devastated, he cannot prove his innocence due to lack of evidence. His claims of patriotic actions and cooperation with the New Fourth Army also fall flat without witnesses. Outside the courtroom, Hai Mo waits anxiously, her face streaked with tears and snow, filled with concern for Gu Yi Zhong's fate.
This battle between justice and evil quietly unfolds in Suzhou, with everyone fighting for their beliefs. Whether Gu Yi Zhong can clear his name and whether Hai Mo and the others' rescue plan will succeed remains uncertain. Regardless of the outcome, they have already demonstrated what true loyalty and courage mean through their actions.
