Episode 4 recap: Gu Yi Zhong Faces the Danger of Being Eliminated

In Episode 4, Zhou Zhi Fei sends his trusted aide, Jin Hai, to meet with Quan Shui in his place, using this as a test of her true intentions while ensuring his own safety. Jin Hai is concerned for Zhou Zhi Fei’s well-being and urges Quan Shui not to meet with him, as she is the top female assassin of the Zhongtong. However, Quan Shui insists on the meeting, claiming that she is there to save Zhou Zhi Fei.

After parting ways with Jin Hai, Quan Shui realizes she is being followed. Seizing the opportunity, she stabs her pursuer but leaves them alive, intending for them to return and warn Zhou Zhi Fei that she won’t be so merciful next time. Jin Hai’s team fails to locate Quan Shui’s current residence, as Zhou Zhi Fei knows she will be hiding in an unexpected place.

Determined to clear his name, Gu Yi Zhong resolutely returns to Suzhou. He seeks help from his cousin, Lu Zheng, to secretly acquire surveillance equipment like binoculars, beginning a close watch on Zhou Zhi Fei. However, his plan does not go as smoothly as he hoped.

Just when Gu Yi Zhong thinks his plan is about to fail, fate offers him an unexpected opportunity. He is easily captured by Zhou Zhi Fei and taken to the 90th Intelligence Station, where he hears a familiar voice complaining about having to act like an actor instead of a spy.

Gu Yi Zhong is surprised but realizes he has fallen into a more complex situation. Zhou Zhi Fei is clearly aware of the special relationship between Gu Yi Zhong and Gu Xi Xing, and he uses this to leverage Gu Yi Zhong as a bargaining chip with Kondo Masao.

Kondo Masao, a Japanese commander with deep knowledge of Chinese culture, has high hopes for Gu Yi Zhong, wanting him to persuade his father to take the position of governor of Wu County. However, Gu Yi Zhong firmly refuses this request. Rather than getting angry, Kondo cleverly stages a “catch and release” scenario to further test Gu Yi Zhong’s loyalty and intelligence.

Kondo respectfully sends Gu Yi Zhong home and calls in reporters to publicize the event. Gu Yi Zhong’s father is furious. Since the fall of Suzhou, he has avoided leaving the house to maintain distance from the Japanese, fully aware that they have nefarious intentions. He is shocked to see Gu Yi Zhong return in a Japanese vehicle, treated with utmost respect, and this scene is captured by reporters. To protect his son, Gu Yi Zhong’s father has no choice but to confine him at home.

The New Fourth Army learns of the situation and sends Zhou Zhen Wu to take action. Xiao Ruo Tong volunteers for the mission, and Wang Ming Zhi arranges for her to pose as Zhou Zhen Wu’s wife. After arriving in Suzhou, Zhou Zhen Wu contacts recruitment officer He Shun Jiang, planning to take nine newly enlisted soldiers on a covert mission to ensure success.

Gu Yi Zhong initially plans to use Hai Mo as a chance to escape, but Quan Shui intervenes, completely derailing his escape plan. Days pass, and seeing that there is still no movement from Gu Xi Xing, Kondo Masao devises a new strategy. He decides to withdraw his intelligence operatives and instead use the Communist Party as pawns, aiming to incite conflict between them and the Gu family.

Kondo meticulously orchestrates a plan for Zhou Zhi Fei’s son, You Fei, to study in Japan, intending to use him as a hostage to control Zhou Zhi Fei. Although Zhou Zhi Fei is reluctant, he has no choice but to comply, especially with many influential families’ children also on the study abroad list.

On the eve of You Fei’s departure, Zhou Zhi Fei arranges for a family portrait and earnestly reminds You Fei to recite the family genealogy, emphasizing the importance of not forgetting their roots.
