Episode 5 recap: # Gu Yi Zhong's Struggle to Prove Himself
In Episode 5, Gu Yi Zhong uses his memory to sketch the appearance of Liu Qiangbao, an impersonator from the New Fourth Army. He contemplates how to find him to clear his name. At this moment, his brother Gu Xi Xing appears, quickly discerning the Japanese army's plans. He decides to help his brother escape to Hong Kong for safety.
Gu Xi Xing rushes to have Fu Gui buy train tickets and personally helps Yi Zhong pack his bags, accompanying him to the train station. His intent is to keep Yi Zhong away from trouble and ensure his safety.
Confidently, Gu Yi Zhong tells his brother that he has found the key to proving his innocence—capturing the spy Liu Qiangbao. However, Gu Xi Xing calmly reminds him that even if they catch Liu Qiangbao, the New Fourth Army may not easily believe someone who was once mistaken for a spy. Time is of the essence, so Gu Xi Xing urges Fu Gui to hurry and get Gu Yi Zhong on his way. Just as they are about to leave, Quan Shui and Hai Mo suddenly block their path, creating a tense atmosphere.
Fortunately, Gu Xi Xing arrives just in time, using his authority and wit to defuse the situation, allowing Gu Yi Zhong to board the train safely.
On the journey, Gu Yi Zhong notices that spies are tailing him. Without hesitation, he jumps off the train to escape, leaving Fu Gui unable to catch up. When Gu Xi Xing hears this, he doesn’t blame Fu Gui; he understands that his son was acting in self-defense.
Now on the run, Gu Yi Zhong's fate is uncertain. Although Gu Xi Xing worries for him, there is little he can do.
Gu Yi Zhong stealthily approaches the 90th spy station, keeping an eye on the busy agents, especially his target, Liu Qiangbao. He quietly follows Liu, waiting for the right moment to strike, and finally manages to subdue him.
After a thorough interrogation, the truth comes to light—it turns out that the dramatic rescue operation was orchestrated by Zhou Zhi Fei. Gu Yi Zhong forces Liu Qiangbao to write a confession and binds him up. He then calls home, asking Hai Mo to grab his bank card and head to the bank.
Hai Mo quickly completes the task and hands the money to Gu Yi Zhong. She wants to ask him where he’s staying, but he simply bids her farewell and disappears into the rain, leaving behind an umbrella that seems to narrate their unexpected reunion and parting.
Xiao Ruo Tong was frantic upon hearing that Gu Yi Zhong had disappeared without a word. She rushed to Gu Yuan to inquire about him. However, Gu Xi Xing had no idea where Gu Yi Zhong had gone, leaving Xiao Ruo Tong feeling extremely disappointed. Just as she was about to leave, Hai Mo appeared and told Xiao Ruo Tong that she had met Gu Yi Zhong and that they had agreed to call each other every day at six o'clock.
This news sparked new hope in Xiao Ruo Tong, and she gratefully took Hai Mo's hand. The two decided to stay in touch and notify each other as soon as they had any news about Gu Yi Zhong.
Following their agreement, Hai Mo went to the place where she had last seen Gu Yi Zhong, only to find several spies surrounding Liu Qiangbao's house. Recognizing the familiar umbrella, she quickly pretended that Liu Qiangbao had just left, successfully distracting the spies. Once they were far enough away, she knocked on Liu Qiangbao's door, where Gu Yi Zhong and Liu Qiangbao were anxiously waiting for her.
Gu Yi Zhong felt a mix of emotions knowing that Xiao Ruo Tong was looking for him. He was aware of the danger he was in but still asked Hai Mo to tell Xiao Ruo Tong to meet him at Zhang Ji Feng Yuan. Unfortunately, their plan was not kept completely secret; while relaying the message, Hai Mo was overheard by Quan Shui. Quan Shui immediately informed Zhou Zhi Fei, bringing a new crisis closer.
Xiao Ruo Tong and Zhou Zhen Wu arrived at the agreed location on time, only to be ambushed by Zhou Zhi Fei. In the chaos, Liu Qiangbao, desperate to save himself, took Xiao Ruo Tong hostage but was quickly shot dead by Zhou Zhen Wu.
During his escape, Gu Yi Zhong accidentally lost Liu Qiangbao's confession. When he realized this and returned to search for it, he found that Zhou Zhi Fei had already destroyed the confession with a bullet. Watching this crucial evidence turn to dust, Gu Yi Zhong was filled with rage and despair. He rushed out in a frenzy, but ultimately could not escape Zhou Zhi Fei's gunfire, collapsing in a pool of blood.
