Episode 11 recap: Tortured in Solitary Confinement

In Episode 11, after realizing his provocations didn’t break Lu Zhengyang, Wang Liqun lies down to sleep, refusing to talk further. The police have their discipline, and they cannot resort to extrajudicial punishment. However, Lin Shaobai isn’t so merciful. Having witnessed Zhao Wangju’s brutal murder, he harbors a deep hatred for Wang Liqun. When Lu Zhengyang is absent, Lin Shaobai seizes Wang Liqun's injury, squeezing it hard, causing Wang Liqun to break out in a sweat from the pain.

Disguised as a doctor, Jiang Yang enters the hospital to investigate but finds the police presence overwhelming. A mere glance with one of the officers raises suspicion, prompting him to leave quickly and monitor from a nearby house, waiting for an opportunity to eliminate Wang Liqun. Meanwhile, Xiao Yun visits the hospital for stomach issues. Lin Shaobai, upon noticing her, follows her and only dismisses his doubts after confirming her illness is genuine.

Wang Liqun is as obstinate as a stone in a cesspool—both foul and unyielding. Lin Shaobai wants Jin Yan to help him obtain a truth serum, but she informs him that those drugs are merely neurotropic substances, ineffective against seasoned spies like Wang Liqun, who possess a stronger mental fortitude than most. Lu Zhengyang gives Lin Shaobai some money collected from their comrades to comfort Zhao Wangju’s parents, who traveled from Anhui.

With the hospital heavily guarded, rescuing someone from there is nearly impossible. Thus, Lu Zhengyang plans to have the police transfer Wang Liqun, allowing them to act during the transfer. Berla instructs Xu Wei to return to where he came from, using the people he can rely on. Xu Wei then enlists the help of Lao Bai, a drug addict. Last month, the hospital commissioned Lanting Studio to create a poster, promising to touch up the paint monthly. Old Yang took the opportunity to go to the hospital and secretly painted Morse code on the poster.

While passing by the poster, Wang Liqun notices the hidden Morse code and, upon returning, begins to eat heartily, abandoning his hunger strike. Lu Zhengyang observes the newly painted poster but thinks nothing of it. Zhao Wangju’s parents are devastated, and coincidentally, a letter of acceptance from a newspaper arrives. Lin Shaobai speaks out for the deceased Zhao Wangju, lamenting that if it weren’t for Wang Liqun, she would have started a new life by now.

Lu Zhengyang confronts Wang Liqun with evidence that the person who killed his brother, Wang Liheng, is now his superior. Wang Liqun is skeptical and demands that Lu Zhengyang find a living witness. Lin Shaobai asks Jin Yan to look after the elderly couple while he goes back to interrogate Wang Liqun. He braces the door with a box to conduct a private interrogation and resorts to torture. Knowing Wang Liqun fears death, Lin Shaobai pretends to inject riboflavin as bromine into the IV, coaxing Wang Liqun to confess that his superior is Berla, and they are executing a plan called “Oversea.”

Just then, Lu Zhengyang and others burst in, interrupting Lin Shaobai’s torture session. Lin Shaobai fails to extract more information and is then put in solitary confinement. Lu Zhengyang reiterates to Wang Liqun that the person who killed Wang Liheng is Berla. Wang Liqun responds that he will agree to any conditions if Lu Zhengyang can find evidence.

Cen Xiaoman returns to the trading company for further investigation and discovers some unregistered paintings. Lu Zhengyang appeals to Wang Liqun, urging him to choose between continuing as a ruthless enforcer or serving the people as a police officer. He recounts Wang Liheng's arrest, revealing that Ma Jianqi, who was responsible for interrogating Wang Liheng, had been tasked with the job on behalf of Berla. Wang Liheng chose not to confess to protect Wang Liqun.

Once Ma Jianqi arrives from Suzhou, Wang Liqun will have the chance to confront him directly. Lu Zhengyang understands that once Ma Jianqi is present, Wang Liqun will likely confess.
