Episode 20 recap: Mistakes Lead to a Transfer to the Pigeon Unit
In Episode 20, although Lin Shaobai isn't the one driving the car, his concealment of Xu Wei's whereabouts is a serious dereliction of duty. Lu Zhengyang instructs Huzi to take Lin Shaobai away, pending disciplinary action. Meanwhile, Xu Wei faces accountability from Bolao, who hands him a gun and suggests he end his own life. Without hesitation, Xu Wei says, "Take care of Zhao Lan for me," and pulls the trigger, only to discover that the gun is empty.
Bolao tests Xu Wei and ultimately spares him due to his loyalty. When Bolao was Zheng Lanting's teacher, he seriously taught Feihang how to paint, appearing to be a harmless mentor. Although Lu Zhengyang is strict with Lin Shaobai, he still advocates for him to Deputy Director Yang, hoping for leniency in his punishment. Huzi and others eavesdrop outside the bathroom, hearing Lu Zhengyang suggest transferring Lin Shaobai from the Second Division to help with the Pigeon Unit under Old Hu.
Deputy Yang senses that Lu Zhengyang has already arranged an escape route for Lin Shaobai and questions what will happen if Lin Shaobai makes another mistake in the Pigeon Unit. Lu Zhengyang confidently assures him that he will take responsibility and resign alongside Lin Shaobai. Deputy Yang remains skeptical, but Lu Zhengyang insists this will be the last chance. Xu Wei, blindfolded, is taken to see Zhao Lan, and Bolao's method of using rewards instead of punishment leaves a lasting impression on him.
After dinner, Zhao Lan tells Xu Wei she wants to return to Shanghai to have their baby, and Xu Wei comforts her, asking her to wait a little longer. Old Xu visits Lin Shaobai, who is in solitary confinement, and informs him that he hasn't been sentenced but can no longer stay in the social department; there’s still a chance in the Pigeon Unit. Old Xu mentions that Lu Zhengyang risked everything to keep Lin Shaobai on the force. Initially resistant to the idea of raising pigeons, Lin Shaobai falls silent after hearing Old Xu’s words.
Feihang collapses due to a congenital heart condition, and Zheng Lanting rushes her to the hospital. Lu Zhengyang arrives and expresses his gratitude while humbly accepting Zheng Lanting's advice. When Feihang wakes up, she reassures Lu Zhengyang not to worry, stating that she’s improving her painting skills under Zheng's patient guidance. Meanwhile, a researcher decides to dispose of laboratory mice by dumping them in the woods.
Soon after, Dr. Zhao discovers several cases of anthrax. Jin Yan receives a notification and goes to help Dr. Zhao trace the source of the outbreak. They find that all the patients have visited the Situ River in Wusong District, and one patient, a sugar factory worker, is identified as the first case. Jin Yan has a sharp intuition that this sugar factory might be the Jin Sugar Factory, owned by her father, Jin Maochang.
Jin Yan takes Liu Rui to the factory for sampling, but Manager Li quickly calls Dr. Xiaocang to inform him and tries to delay Jin Yan at the factory entrance. Ignoring his obstruction, Jin Yan collects samples from the research room and the surrounding area. Jin Maochang receives a warning call from Xu Wei, cautioning him to keep an eye on Jin Yan; otherwise, if she sees something she shouldn’t, the consequences could be dire.
That evening, Jin Maochang advises Jin Yan, but she brushes it off. Mao Sen arranges for Bolao to meet him overnight on an island in Zhoushan. He starts with some empty flattery about supporting Bolao before discussing business — asking Bolao to find a way to transport supplies from Shanghai to Zhoushan on dozens of ships. Bolao politely declines, but Mao Sen presents a presidential order, prompting Bolao to agree to find a solution quickly.
On his first day at the Pigeon Unit in uniform, Lin Shaobai climbs a high staircase with Old Hu.
