Episode 21 recap: Fake Liberation Army Captures Entrepreneurs
In Episode 21, Xu Wei meets Zheng Lanting at Pigeon Square. Jin Maochang assigns Xu Wei a new identity as the warehouse manager at the dock, and Zheng hands him a folder containing his credentials and Jin’s latest mission. Zheng tells Xu that his time in hiding is over, and it’s time for him to take flight. Soon after, Jin Maochang receives the mission from Xu Wei, gaining insight into the activities of pro-communist entrepreneurs, which he then passes on to Ying Sun.
Lin Shaobai talks to himself while cleaning a pigeon cage full of droppings. Jin Yan arrives with two popsicles and jokes about smelling the sourness of unrecognized talent. Lin stubbornly denies it, boasting that he can solve major cases with the help of pigeons, but Jin quickly points out his arrogance. Lin brags that he can make his pigeon, Daba, return in ten seconds, but even after the time passes, Daba has yet to come back.
After Jin leaves, Daba finally returns leisurely, and when Lin tries to catch it, Daba flies up and drops a fresh load of droppings right on Lin's head. Meanwhile, Dr. Zhao and his team discover anthrax spores in some rodent droppings collected from near the Jin Sugar Factory.
Jin Yan asks Liu Rui to assist Dr. Zhao with the investigation. Dr. Zhao invites Jin to a Western restaurant tonight to give her the test results. Liu, without thinking, claims everyone knows Dr. Zhao is pursuing Jin. Jin decides to work late and sends Liu in her place to pick up the report. Although Liu protests that it’s inappropriate, he ends up indulging in steak at the restaurant.
Dr. Zhao discreetly hides a rose and hands the test results to Liu, then leaves quickly. Just after Jin departs, Jin Maochang calls Ying Sun to inform him that the police are expanding their investigation. Jiang Yang shows Jin some photos, and Jin recognizes Zheng Lanting, remembering her from the sugar factory’s opening day when she was writing slogans.
Jiang adds that Zheng is indeed an art teacher at Minli Primary School and has taught Da Bao and Er Bao. Jin notes that children are a weakness, and for their sake, they should take action. Jiang disguises himself as a business owner wanting a new shop sign and enters Zheng’s art studio, raising the suspicion of the watchful Berlao. Jin hands Xu Wei the list of pro-communist entrepreneurs and offers a rundown warehouse for their operation, insisting that he join Xu to avoid suspicion.
Before long, Xu Wei and a group disguised as the Liberation Army apprehend a number of pro-communist entrepreneurs, including Jin Maochang. The checkpoint soldiers find people locked in a car but are quickly silenced by Xu Wei. Xu takes them to the warehouse, where he and Jin continue their act. Berlao develops the photos and sends them to a newspaper, which publishes the shocking news of the Liberation Army kidnapping Shanghai entrepreneurs, creating a huge stir.
Lu Zhengyang immediately leads a team to investigate the scene of the entrepreneurs’ capture, noticing that there’s a uniform type of sand all over, suggesting a common source. Jin Yan is tasked with testing the sand, while Lu Zhengyang starts tracing the photo paper used in the pictures, checking how many shops in Shanghai sell it. Lin Shaobai takes his pigeon to the social services office under the pretense of delivering it but is actually trying to gather information on the case's progress, ignoring Lu’s warnings.
Lu and his team discover a private investigator has bought a large amount of photo paper but has only used one box. Huzi presses the investigator about the whereabouts of the remaining paper.
