Episode 30 recap: The Espionage Bombing Brings Widespread Sorrow

In Episode 30, Li Xu follows Berlao's instructions to discreetly investigate the specific locations of key sites in Shanghai, such as the Mechanical and Electrical Factory and the Water Plant. Not only does he gather detailed information about wind direction, factory safety, production layout, and security measures, but he also aims to ensure that every piece of information is flawless. Berlao and his group of spies are essentially providing the Nationalist Air Force with precise coordinates for bombing Shanghai, leading to the sacrifice of countless innocent civilians. Once a thriving area, Taipingli is now filled with devastation and sorrow.

Lin Shaobai witnesses all of this and is heartbroken. In a fit of rage, he nearly shoots the disguised spy Chen Rushan, who pretends to be a rescuer, but is stopped just in time by Old Lu. Old Lu promises Lin Shaobai that he will make Chen Rushan and the forces behind him pay for their crimes. Meanwhile, the Yangshupu area suffers heavy damage as multiple bombs fall, causing widespread power outages and halting operations at factories and the water plant.

However, Berlao's plot does not stop there; he continues to relay coordinates, intending to plunge Shanghai into even deeper disaster. Xu Wei feels confused and worries that if the bombings continue, Shanghai will become a wasteland. Berlao, however, sees himself as a savior, believing he is "purifying" Shanghai by eliminating so-called "useless people," all while trampling on the lives of countless Shanghai citizens.

At a critical moment, the central government intervenes, coordinating secret support from the Soviet air force to establish a joint air defense command center in Shanghai. Vice Yang decides to send Old Lu to oversee the security of the command center and warns him to be aware of possible infiltrators within.

After the bombings, Taipingli falls into despair, and even Mr. Wang, who is usually stingy, generously shares his precious canned meat with the community. Meanwhile, the Eagle and Falcon factions pressure Jin Maochang to hand over the plans for Shanghai’s resumption of production, intending to use it as a target for the next round of bombings. Lin Shaobai learns from the forensic department that Li Yuquan's time of death was before the anthrax bacteria's expiration, leading him to deduce that the research base for the bacteria was moved after his death. He warns Jin Yan that Jin Maochang might be colluding with the spies, and the two decide to investigate together.

Jin Maochang mistakenly believes his daughter has been kidnapped by Berlao and rushes to the Lanting studio, but suddenly realizes and changes his route to the social services office. Lin Shaobai and Jin Yan have already set a trap, and with Old Lu’s help, they make Jin Maochang think that they have cleared any doubts about him. That night, Jin Yan returns safely and uses the excuse of handling a car accident to cover her whereabouts. Although Jin Maochang is suspicious, he is relieved to see his daughter unharmed and does not press further.

As the new year approaches, Xu Wei volunteers to go to Zhejiang to deliver New Year’s goods, but he is actually concerned about his wife Zhao Lan, who is about to give birth. Berlao sees through his intentions and readily approves his request. Feihang and Old Lu go to the Lin family to celebrate the festival, filling the home with laughter and warmth. Zheng Lanting and Xiao Yun distribute supplies in the market, and after a few drinks, Xiao Yun confesses her desire to have children, but Zheng Lanting dismisses it as a joke.

After the new year, under Old Lu's guidance, Lin Shaobai makes significant progress in his tracking skills. Berlao, not to be outdone, orders the Eagle faction to contact Lin Chi, attempting to learn the location of the air defense command center through Lu Zhengyang, and to collude with the T-Bay forces to destroy it. However, all of this is closely monitored by the forces of justice, and a more intense clash is brewing just beneath the surface.
