Episode 34 recap: Jin Lao's Near Miss Leads to Failure

A recent series of events has increasingly implicated Jin Maochang. Cen Xiaoman and Li Yaohong returned from their investigation with findings about an account that frequently received large transfers of money. This money belonged to Wang Liqun, and the sender was Shanghai Gangtong Trading Company, a firm specialized in facilitating money transfers for clients, primarily large banks in Hong Kong. In addition to Wang Liqun, they also transferred $50,000 to someone named Han Jinkui.

Upon further investigation, Xiaoman and Yaohong discovered that the major backer behind Han Jinkui was, in fact, Jin Maochang. This confirmed their suspicion that Jin Maochang was funding Beilao and had also hired Han Jinkui as a puppet master.

Lin Shaobai finally understood that Jin Shushu had sent Jin Yan to Nanjing so he could confront Beilao without any distractions. Lao Lu, seeing that Jin Maochang was no match for Beilao, immediately made plans for action.

Jin Maochang, not wanting Lao Zhou to get involved, found that Lao Zhou was determined to stick by him. With Jin Maochang out of sight, Lao Lu sent someone to investigate his network.

At the agreed time, Beilao arrived at the dock warehouse on a bicycle with Xu Wei. Jin Lao inquired about Xiao Yun's whereabouts, to which Beilao bluntly replied that he had abandoned her. Once inside the warehouse, Han Jinkui appeared, prompting Jin Lao to flip the table in frustration and confront Beilao directly.

Beilao, somewhat puzzled, offered Jin Lao one last chance. Han Jinkui claimed to be Jiang Yang's brother, but upon learning that Jin Lao had buried Jiang Yang alive, he aimed his gun at Jin Maochang. After a struggle, however, he redirected the gun at Beilao. At that moment, Xiao Yun shot Han Jinkui from the shadows, leading to a flurry of gunfire in the warehouse, during which Xu Wei took the opportunity to injure Jin Maochang.

Xiaoman quickly reported to Lao Lu that there was trouble at Warehouse 3. By the time they arrived, Jin Maochang was on the verge of death, managing to gasp that Zheng Lanting had escaped by boat. Shaobai stayed with Jin Lao until the end, promising to take care of Jin Yan. However, Jin Yan returned just in time to find she had missed her father's last moments.

Because of Jin Maochang's connections with the spies, Lao Lu informed Jin Yan that her father's factory would have to close for a thorough investigation. Fortunately, they clarified that Jin Yan had no involvement in her father's affairs. Although saddened, Jin Yan accepted the reality, thinking that her father had always struggled to find peace in life, and now he could finally rest.

Meanwhile, Beilao ordered Xu Wei to sink the boat and eliminate the crew to create the illusion that they had left Shanghai. However, he sensed that Xu Wei was hiding something. Xu Wei confessed that he had previously been bribed by Jin Lao; although he took the money, he never acted on it. Xiao Yun insisted that Xu Wei could no longer be trusted, but Beilao decided not to punish him due to the current lack of manpower, preferring to avoid making more enemies. The Secret Service also sent a new station chief, Liu Gui Hang, who was familiar to Beilao.

Mao Renfeng played his cards brilliantly, demoting Beilao to deputy chief as a way for him to redeem himself while Liu Gui Hang became the new chief. Upon returning to the watch shop, Beilao discovered that the hidden gold bars and cash were gone. Meanwhile, Shaobai took his family to visit Jin Yan, cooking a feast in hopes of lifting her spirits.
