Episode 4 recap: The Enemy Sets a Trap

In Episode 4, after realizing he’s been deceived, Lu Zhengyang goes directly to Lin Shaobai’s house to wait for him. Lin Shaobai rushes home only to find Lu Zhengyang already there. Reluctantly, he decides to take Lu Zhengyang to the Haolaiwu club to look for someone. Luo San, a frequent gambler, is suspected to have money and might show up there.

In the social scene, Lin Shaobai navigates easily, spinning lies effortlessly as he chats with Boss Gu from the club. He claims to be on duty at the Public Security Bureau and introduces Lu Zhengyang as his new subordinate. Lu Zhengyang chooses not to expose Lin Shaobai’s deceit. Through subtle questioning, Lin Shaobai learns that Luo San visited the club the previous day, lost two small fish, and owes Boss Gu a significant amount of money, promising to return in a couple of days.

Lin Shaobai asks Boss Gu about Luo San’s hotel, and soon after, Lu Zhengyang and he head to the hotel room, only to be shocked to find Luo San dead in bed. Lu Zhengyang instructs a staff member to call the police and confirms that the locksmith was indeed Luo San. Lu Zhengyang’s movements are being monitored by Beilao, who instructs Xiao Yun to prepare a “welcome gift” for when the police arrive.

Lin Shaobai brings in Jin Yan, a part-time coroner, to examine the body, boasting about their childhood friendship and their families’ longstanding ties. During the autopsy report, Jin Yan states that Luo San died from poisoning. With Lin Shaobai's help, Lu Zhengyang traces leads to Wu’s Iron Factory and decides to act that very night.

Believing he should also take part in the operation, Lin Shaobai requests a gun, but instead receives a pair of handcuffs. Lu Zhengyang and his team arrive at Wu’s Iron Factory, where Wang Li Qun is hiding above. Beilao had previously instructed him to finish off Lu Zhengyang if he survived the initial explosion, while avoiding exposure.

When the phone rings at the security booth, Lu Zhengyang uses a visual distraction to let Lao Xu sneak in and capture the enemy agents above, while he himself detonates explosives to confuse them. Wang Li Qun, however, quickly realizes the police are closing in and opens fire to protect himself, escaping in the chaos.

Wang Li Qun calls to report the failure of the operation and his minor injuries. Beilao coldly orders him not to let any more mistakes happen next time, showing no concern for his wounds.

Lu Zhengyang suspects that the enemy wants to quickly exchange silver dollars, and the only place where large amounts can be exchanged is known only to Lin Shaobai. Lin Shaobai reveals that before the liberation, the Kuomintang had already exchanged the people's money for gold yuan, leaving only underground banks for large silver dollar exchanges.

The Haolaiwu club they previously visited, ostensibly a gambling house, actually serves as a large underground bank. Lin Shaobai takes Lu Zhengyang to the club, where he loses the money he brought. Lu Zhengyang then takes over and wins back all of it, raking in over six thousand silver dollars. When Boss Gu appears, trying to drive them out with six thousand dollars, Lu Zhengyang uses the money to create chaos at the casino, allowing Lin Shaobai to sneak into Boss Gu’s office.

Lin Shaobai opens Boss Gu’s safe and discovers numerous gold bars inside. Boss Gu claims these were lost by gamblers, but Lin Shaobai quickly exposes his lie. Embarrassed and angry, Boss Gu reluctantly reveals the time and place of a transaction he has scheduled for the next day.

Lu Zhengyang and his team set up an ambush, but before they can make any arrests, the enemy secretly eliminates them. Beilao organizes a group called the Anti-Communist Salvation Army to implement his anti-communist plans.
