Episode 5 recap: The Suspicions Surrounding the Explosion Case
In this episode, Wang Li Qun faces failure in a mission and admits his mistake. Bu Lao advises him not to lose hope after one or two setbacks, emphasizing that Wang Li Qun is a hawk, not an ordinary sparrow. However, despite this encouragement, Bu Lao assigns another task to Lao Yang. Wang Li Qun feels dissatisfied that Bu Lao entrusted the organization’s patriotic mission to Lao Yang, who comes from a background as a painter. He knows that his failure in the recent financial mission has disappointed his mentor.
In front of Lao Yang, Wang Li Qun feels superior, believing that Lao Yang’s paintings are inferior to his mentor's work and that Lao Yang lacks the qualifications and capability to hold the position of deputy director at the Shanghai Special Station. Lao Yang does not argue but remarks after Wang Li Qun leaves, “Heaven will ensure the downfall of those who are reckless.” This seems to foreshadow Wang Li Qun’s future path.
Deputy Director Yang instructs Lu Zhengyang to teach Lin Shao Bai, starting with helping him relax. This doesn’t mean that past events will go uninvestigated; rather, they aim to use Lin Shao Bai to make the case investigation easier. Zheng Lan Ting (Bu Lao) takes Wang Li Qun to an island in Zhoushan to meet Mao Sen.
Mao Sen praises the significant heist orchestrated by Zheng Lan Ting, who openly mentions the list of undercover agents again. Mao Sen requests Zheng Lan Ting's trump card in exchange, but Zheng Lan Ting refuses to hand it over, as it is a crucial part of his plan, essentially his ace in the hole.
Winners face no blame, so even though there were previous examples of the Japanese using similar tactics, Zheng Lan Ting remains resolute in his approach, insisting that he doesn’t need to bear responsibility for the party or the nation. Hu Zi appears to be taking Lin Shao Bai to his demise, startling him, only for Lin Shao Bai to discover he’s being taken out for a meal with Lu Zhengyang.
Lu Zhengyang insists that Lin Shao Bai is innocent and crucial in helping them solve the case, deserving recognition. He invites Lin Shao Bai to join the social affairs department, even though it would be as a non-staff member. Lu Zhengyang assures him he would earn the highest salary among non-staff members. However, Lin Shao Bai declines, considering it a job where he would have to risk his life. Lu Zhengyang does not press him, stating that he can leave anytime he wishes.
Xu Wei knocks out a member of the military unification group and secretly boards a ship leaving the island with Zheng Lan Ting. However, Wang Li Qun and Zheng Lan Ting discover him and tell Liu Gui Hang that Xu Wei did not board the ship.
Lin Shao Bai happily returns home with a kitten named Liu Yi, only to find his two mothers selling vegetables. Unfortunately, the vegetables have started to spoil as they didn’t sell in time. With just a few casual words, Lin Shao Bai manages to sell a lot of the canned goods they had stockpiled, along with some vegetables. He plans to send a little something to Xu Wei but learns that Xu Wei didn’t come back with them.
Years ago, Xu Wei was used by Wang Li Qun, unknowingly becoming one of the culprits responsible for the deaths of G party members in the Western-style building. After receiving money from Wang Li Qun and learning the truth, Xu Wei threatens Wang Li Qun not to harm Lin Shao Bai, warning that he won't hesitate to turn against him.
This "relationship" is why Zheng Lan Ting, upon discovering Xu Wei secretly boarded the ship, doesn’t inform Mao Sen’s people. Xu Wei knows what Wang Li Qun and Zheng Lan Ting are up to, and he firmly refuses to get involved. Zheng Lan Ting isn’t angry; he finds Xu Wei to be a useful pawn and has plenty of ways to utilize him.
Lin Shao Bai is well aware of the explosion case from years ago, and the reason he hesitates to disclose the details is that it involves his good friend Xu Wei. Hu Zi follows Lin Shao Bai and discovers he is looking for someone named Xu Wei. Lu Zhengyang connects the recent major cases and finds that their methods bear a striking resemblance to the explosion case from years ago.
Lin Shao Bai shows no discipline, making it unlikely that he is part of the military unification group. The Xu Wei he is searching for is likely the reason Lin Shao Bai has been trying to conceal the truth about the explosion case all along.
