Episode 6 recap: Murder of the Cotton Mill Manager

In Episode 6, a murder occurs at Jin Maochang's Jin Textile Factory, where the manager is found dead in Maochang's office. Maochang immediately calls the police, and Lin Shaobai, who is shopping nearby, hears the news and rushes to the crime scene. There, he discovers footprints under the window and a fallen good luck charm. He immediately thinks of Xu Wei, as he had previously given this charm to him.

Driven by personal motives, Lin Shaobai hides the charm. Meanwhile, Lu Zhengyang arrives at the scene and orders Lin Shaobai to leave. He then begins questioning the factory staff, eventually turning to Lin Shaobai. Lin has an alibi; he was at Uncle Jin's house for dinner until after nine, and Jin Yan can confirm this. If needed, they can also ask the family driver.

The last person to be questioned is Jin Maochang. Initially, he claims that investing in Liu Mingjian's factory saved him, but staff feedback contradicts this. Maochang admits he had previously provided some funding to a secret military organization in Shanghai, covering expenses for restaurants, clinics, and grocery stores. A few days prior, Liu Mingjian had threatened him with these accounts, demanding he transfer the factory ownership for free.

Maochang briefly considered murder to silence Liu but quickly dismissed the idea. The investigation team views him as a potential suspect due to his motive, and as a precaution, they advise him not to leave town. Since this case involves Jin Yan's father, regulations prevent her from participating in the autopsy. However, her assistant Liu Rui lacks the skill to perform the autopsy alone, so Jin Yan makes an exception to help. When Lu Zhengyang arrives and sees this, he calls Liu Rui over to emphasize the importance of following protocol. Jin Yan explains the situation and assures him, and Lu Zhengyang reluctantly allows her to participate while overseeing the process.

Back at the scene, Lin Shaobai finds two sets of footprints outside the window, suggesting there were two assailants who retraced their steps. Earlier, he had asked a newspaper boy, Xiao Zhang, to look for Xu Wei. Although Xiao Zhang couldn’t find him, his friend A Cheng had seen Xu Wei arguing with someone around the same time as the murder. Lin promptly asks A Cheng about the argument, and he reveals they discussed a lost charm.

Lin Shaobai's investigation is clearly progressing faster than Lu Zhengyang’s team. While Lu is still reviewing newspaper photos, Lin has already linked the case to Xu Wei. When Lu sees Xu Wei's image in the photos, he too starts to pay attention to him. The autopsy report reveals that the murder method resembles that of a bombing incident four years ago on Fuzhou Road, and the victim was left-handed, using a double-edged butterfly knife.

Lin bursts in, asserting that the murderer is the same as in the Fuzhou case. He produces a sketch of the suspect, claiming he saw this person four years ago. Lin is determined to continue working with the police to apprehend him. Lu Zhengyang points out that Lin's motives go beyond this; Xu Wei answered the emergency call during the bombing, implicating him in that incident as well. Lin had previously withheld this information to protect Xu Wei, and this time is no different.

In a show of sincerity, Lin reveals everything he knows. Meanwhile, a figure codenamed Eagle, Wang Liqun, confronts Jin Maochang, using Jin Yan to threaten him into continuing his work for the party. Liu Mingjian’s allegiance is now tied to Xu Wei, and Zheng Lanting instructs Wang Liqun to deliver a bag of money to Xu Wei. Unnoticed, Xu Wei goes to a mall to give the money to his wife, but Lin Shaobai spots him hiding in a storage area. With surveillance around, Lin can only pretend to unlock the door.

Lin wants to help Xu Wei, but Xu Wei jumps out the window and escapes, leaving Lin to feign ignorance. Soon after, Lin Shaobai officially starts his new job at the social department, but on his first day, he arrives late.
