Episode 7 recap: Xu Wei Involved in a Murder Case
In Episode 7, a murder occurs at Jin Maochang's textile factory, where the manager is found dead in Jin's office. Jin calls the police, and Lin Shaobai, who is nearby shopping, hears about it and rushes to the crime scene. He discovers footprints under the window and a fallen peace charm. This charm reminds him of Xu Wei, as he had given it to Xu Wei previously.
Out of personal interest, Lin Shaobai secretly takes the charm. Meanwhile, Lu Zhengyang arrives at the crime scene and orders Lin to leave. He begins questioning factory employees, eventually getting to Lin Shaobai. Lin has an alibi, having dined at Uncle Jin's place until after nine, with Jin Yan able to confirm this, or they could ask the Jin family's driver.
The final person questioned is Jin Maochang. Initially, he claims that investing in Liu Mingjian's factory saved him, but employee feedback suggests otherwise. Jin admits that he had previously provided some financial support to a secret organization under the military in Shanghai, mainly covering expenses for restaurants, clinics, and grocery stores. Recently, Liu Mingjian had used these accounts to threaten Jin into transferring the factory to him for free.
In that moment, Jin Maochang did consider murder to silence Liu, but his rationality returned, and he dismissed the thought. The police suspect Jin has a motive for murder, so they instruct him not to leave town. Since the case involves Jin Yan's father, protocol prohibits her from participating in the autopsy. However, Liu Rui, her assistant, lacks the skills to perform it independently, so Jin Yan steps in to help. When Lu Zhengyang arrives and sees this, he calls Liu Rui over to emphasize the importance of adhering to protocols. Jin Yan explains the situation and assures him, so Lu watches the autopsy process from outside, allowing her to participate.
Lin Shaobai returns to the scene and discovers footprints outside the window, suggesting there were two assailants who left the same way they came. Earlier, Lin had asked a paperboy, Xiao Zhang, to find Xu Wei. While Xiao Zhang couldn’t locate him, his friend A Cheng mentioned seeing Xu Wei arguing with someone around the same time. Lin quickly presses A Cheng for details, learning they discussed a lost amulet.
Clearly, Lin's investigation is progressing much faster than Lu Zhengyang's. While Lu is still looking at photos from the newspaper office, Lin has already linked the case to Xu Wei. Upon seeing other photos with Xu Wei in them, Lu also takes note of him. The autopsy report reveals that the murder method resembles a bombing case from four years ago on Fuzhou Road, and the victim was left-handed, using a double-edged butterfly knife.
Lin bursts in, claiming that the murderer is the same as in the Fuzhou case, producing a sketch of the suspect and asserting he saw this person four years ago. Lin wants to continue working with the police to apprehend him. Lu Zhengyang points out that Lin's intentions are not solely about the case; the call reporting the explosion four years ago was received by Xu Wei, indicating a connection. Lin's previous lack of disclosure was an attempt to protect Xu Wei, as is the case now.
Lin openly shares everything he knows to demonstrate his sincerity. Meanwhile, a figure named Wang Liqun, codenamed "Eagle," confronts Jin Maochang, using Jin Yan as leverage to force him to continue working for the party. Liu Mingjian's demands are now tied to Xu Wei, as instructed by Zheng Lanting, who tells Wang to hand over a bag of money to Xu Wei. While no one is watching, Xu Wei sneaks off to the mall to give the money to his wife. Lin Shaobai arrives just in time to sense Xu Wei hiding in a storage area, but there are eyes around, forcing Lin to pretend to lock the door.
Lin wants to help Xu Wei, but Xu jumps out the window to escape, leaving Lin to act as if nothing happened. Soon after, Lin officially starts working at the social affairs office, but on his first day, he arrives late.
