Episode 10 recap: Chen Ke Hai gets promoted.
Chen Ke Hai encounters Tian Liu and praises her for her exceptional abilities. While the security at the banquet of Number 76 is tight, she effortlessly navigates through it as if it were an empty place. She claims that there is no party in Shanghai that she cannot attend, regardless of its size. Fang Li hands over the proceeds from the medicine, but Xing Han Zhu falsely accuses him of an incorrect amount.
Chen Bin intentionally targets Chen Ke Hai, but Chen Ke Hai sees through his motives and claims to have a germ phobia, not wanting others to touch his belongings. However, Chen Bin directly snatches his pen away.
By firing the gun, Chen Ke Hai finally clears himself of suspicion in Li Tang's eyes, and the person monitoring the situation also clarifies the matter. During this time, two phone calls come in, but no one speaks, indicating that they were dialed incorrectly. Li Tang advises the comrades to rest well but is immediately killed by someone outside as soon as he steps out of the ward. Li Tang and Chen Ke Hai have breakfast together, and when Li Tang goes to settle the bill, Lao Duan's hat falls to the ground. Chen Ke Hai picks it up and discreetly passes on the message to "wait and see."
The person monitoring continues to observe the movements in the room, and Chen Ke Hai acts cautiously throughout. He and Li Tang encounter a group of people pushing something in a courtyard. Chen Ke Hai realizes that they are not Communist Party members but rather engaged in some kind of transaction. Chen Ke Hai and the others return to Shanghai, where Fang Li welcomes them and arranges a celebration. During the celebration, Li Tang privately acknowledges Chen Ke Hai's contributions, considering him the hero of this mission. Chen Bin expresses his dissatisfaction with Chen Ke Hai openly, as he suspects that Chen Ke Hai leaked information when he left midway.
Fang Li, slightly intoxicated, mentions that their current achievements are inseparable from Chen Ke Hai. Tian Liu appears at the celebration, and Li Tang directly addresses her as Qiu Ping. When everyone realizes their mistake, they are taken aback. Luo Bing's hairpin is found at Chen Ke Hai's home, and she comes specifically to retrieve it. Tian Liu declares that there is no party in Shanghai that she cannot attend, questioning why Chen Ke Hai had time to attend the evening banquet but refused to meet her. Fang Li jokingly teases Chen Ke Hai about his daily investigations into who uses which brand of lipstick and who likes to eat what. Tian Liu invites Chen Ke Hai to watch her debut play, but he declines due to lack of time, so Fang Li enthusiastically accepts the tickets instead.
Chen Ke Hai was informed by Chen Shu the next day that she returned the hairpin to Luo Bing. He felt guilty because Luo Bing was insulted by Fang Li last time. Knowing that Chen Shu followed Fang Li's instructions and didn't apologize to her, he was displeased. He expressed to Chen Shu that since they were here, they were family and he hoped to set things right. Chen Ke Hai quietly sneaked into Professor Liu's room next door. Xing Han Zhu said he would report to Director Li that the achievements in Hangzhou were all fake and that the other party had a survivor. Fang Li only stated that the plan was approved by Director Li and they used drugs as bait to eliminate the gang. Xing Han Zhu accused Fang Li of embezzling drug funds, even though they were turned in, the amount was incorrect. They had an argument, and Director Li comforted Xing Han Zhu separately.
Fang Li specially prepared an office for Chen Ke Hai to celebrate his promotion to the Chief of the Inspection Department. His subordinates reported to him that two colleagues had made mistakes and were still detained, and their families asked if they could arrange for a pardon. Chen Ke Hai said he would handle the matter according to the regulations as soon as possible. However, his colleagues took out a bag of money to bribe him, but Chen Ke Hai refused to accept it and demanded that the suspects be interrogated. The two colleagues were called into the office, where they admitted to taking a few counterfeit bills while on a mission, but later realized they were fake and were planning to return them when they were caught. Chen Ke Hai believed that the matter was minor and didn't warrant detention. They claimed that the incident was classified by the Japanese as leaking military secrets and that the business behind it was connected to the military. There was some kind of plan, and all the evidence, including the plan document, was handed over to the department.
Chen Ke Hai went to the archive room, but access to that file was only allowed for officials at the level of section chief or above. Chen Ke Hai suggested that Fang Li take a look at it for him, and the administrator, knowing their relationship, made an exception and allowed him to take a look. Fang Li found the file and unintentionally noticed a smell. After heating it with a lighter, some words became visible. Later, when Chen Ke Hai was staring at the file with a pen in his hand, Chen Bin appeared behind him and suspected that his pen was problematic. He used the excuse of liking his pen, but Chen Ke Hai refused to let him see it due to his cleanliness concerns. When Chen Bin accidentally tripped and fell while trying to grab the pen, he paid his respects to Chen Ke Hai. Chen Ke Hai decided to give him the pen and complained to the administrator about the lack of funds in the department that they couldn't even afford pens.
When Chen Ke Hai returned home and got off the car, he was bumped by Professor Liu and others from next door. Chen Shu also used the excuse to go out. Chen Ke Hai took advantage of this opportunity and directly picked up a listening device. He overheard the professor and his classmates discussing the street demonstration planned for the next day. Chen Ke Hai intended to reveal the truth and hand over the ransom to release his subordinate who had committed theft. Gao Mu arrived at No. 76 and held an emergency meeting, handing over the names of the individuals involved in the division of anti-Japanese forces to Fang Li, emphasizing that they would rather kill a thousand innocent people than let one go. Chen Bin returned the pen to Fang Li, who mentioned having a private matter. However, Chen Bin insisted on keeping Fang Li from leaving. Chen Bin intentionally delayed Chen Ke Hai by bringing up the discovery of the counterfeit money printing plate. Even Li Tang noticed that Chen Ke Hai had been restless since the meeting started, and now he was eager to make a phone call. It seemed that it wouldn't be long before the truth was revealed.
