Episode 13 recap: Fang Li kidnaps the Japanese spy.
Lao Jin finds the whereabouts of the Japanese agent and meets with Fang Li. Chen Ke Hai, while at home, investigates Xing Han Zhu's relationship with everyone and suspects that Fang Li intentionally let the Japanese agent and the Soviet female agent go free. Fang Li maintains a calm demeanor while looking at Chen Ke Hai, who casually remarks that there's no need for such a look since it's not a big deal and the significance depends on the context. Chen Ke Hai, wanting a female companion, attends the dinner with Fang Li and Tian Liu, specifically buying Luo Bing an outfit to accompany him. While dancing, Fang Li deliberately provokes Luo Bing to slap him, and at that moment, the person Xing Han Zhu brought upstairs recognizes Fang Li.
Xing Han Zhu went to Fang Li's office and mistakenly thought Fang Li was inside. He insisted on finding him to argue, but Chen Ke Hai lied and claimed he had written a report to report him, even encouraging him to go inside and soften up. Seeing this situation, Xing Han Zhu did not barge into the office, and Chen Ke Hai's lie was not exposed for the time being. Lao Jin found the whereabouts of the Japanese spy and went inside with Fang Li, killing his mistress and kidnapping him to the Xing Long warehouse. After Fang Li left, Qian San, hiding in the closet, looked fearfully at the pen on the ground, wanting to take it but not daring to come out.
Fang Li's decision to let Natasha go made Chen Ke Hai suspicious. Who exactly is Fang Li? The Japanese person in the warehouse deliberately spoke in Japanese, asking Fang Li to let him go. Fang Li knew his secret. Besides, could he escape from this door and cooperate well? Lao Jin used torture on him to make him tell the truth. Lao Jin buried a corpse in the mountains and when Chen Ke Hai saw Fang Li just arriving at the department, he took the opportunity to get off the car and hand him breakfast. Fang Li saw Chen Ke Hai going to an emergency meeting and was about to get the painting, but Fang Li turned back and took the painting away. Xing Han Zhu caught the man who was hiding in the closet at that time, but because the lighting was dim when Fang Li killed someone, he couldn't recognize the assailant at all.
Chen Ke Hai, feeling uncomfortable being alone after Chen Shu's death, came to find Chen Ke Hai again in order to get close to the painting. If the painting is not destroyed, he will never be at ease. Xing Han Zhu reported to Director Li that the Japanese spy's mistress died at the scene, and it was revealed that the mistress had secretly had an affair with Qian San. When Qian San and the mistress were having an affair, the Japanese spy came. Originally, Xing Han Zhu planned to come out of the closet after the Japanese spy left. Unexpectedly, two young men kidnapped the Japanese spy, and Qian San found a pen next to the woman. Director Li recognized the pen as number 76, indicating that there was a mole. In order to catch the mole, they specially arranged a weekend party and required all personnel to attend. Qian San would secretly identify the mole, and those who received the invitation letter were not allowed to take leave.
Chen Ke Hai and Fang Li had dinner together and noticed that the food was spicier than usual. Fang Li went into the room to fetch a bottle of fine wine, and during that time, Chen Ke Hai removed the hidden mark on the painting. He asked Fang Li why he let the Soviet spy go, to which Fang Li found it strange that Chen Ke Hai would think that way. Chen Ke Hai directly revealed that he had discovered the presence of Japanese spies and their lack of immediate capture, as well as the escape of the Soviet spy without an extensive search. Fang Li explained that it was done to catch them red-handed, but Chen Ke Hai believed that Xing Han Zhu would not let him off the hook, and that Agent 76 had also realized it's best not to interfere. Chen Ke Hai received an invitation and handed it to Fang Li, suspecting that the upcoming ball would involve the same people from their previous mission and that its purpose was not pure. However, Fang Li thought differently, believing that the friction with the Japanese necessitated the ball to calm people's nerves and welcome a Lieutenant General.
Chen Ke Hai used the pretext of buying medicine to report to Lao Duan about Fang Li releasing the Soviet spy, suspecting that Fang Li was affiliated with the Chongqing faction. He believed that if Fang Li fell into the hands of Chongqing, it would have an impact. However, Lao Duan had no evidence to refute Chen Ke Hai's speculation. During the weekend, the Japanese club welcomed Yuan Tian Zhen Ming, and upon hearing his name, Lao Duan informed them that he was extremely ruthless, executing both civilians and prisoners of war. Chen Ke Hai believed that the Military Statistical Bureau (军统) would likely use the ball as an opportunity for assassination. He wanted to attend but was denied by the roadblock. Chen Ke Hai arrived at the club, and Fang Li took the initiative to present Luo Bing with a dress and invited her to be his partner, using Chen Ke Hai's name. Luo Bing mentioned receiving Fang Li's distress signal and rushed to the club immediately, which made Tian Liu slightly jealous upon seeing Luo Bing. A waiter accidentally bumped into Yuan Tian Zhen Ming and was immediately taken out and executed. Chen Ke Hai wanted to stop it but was restrained by Fang Li. Chen Ke Hai noticed that Xing Han Zhu had also arrived and expressed his intention to find an opportunity to escort Luo Bing and Tian Liu out of there.
While Fang Li and Chen Ke Hai were dancing with their partners, Qian San on the second floor couldn't distinguish between the two, only remembering that one was tall and the other slightly darker-skinned. Fang Li warned Tian Liu that if she ever played both sides, she should inform him in advance. Tian Liu claimed she was intentionally testing the two of them to see who was more suitable for her. She moved into Chen Ke Hai's arms while dancing and expressed her love for him, but Chen Ke Hai publicly rejected her. Luo Bing believed that Tian Liu would be more suitable for her plan to get close to Chen Ke Hai, and Fang Li instructed her to slap him later and then take Chen Ke Hai away, as far as possible.
Luo Bing slapped Fang Li and left, and Chen Ke Hai followed after her, apologizing on behalf of Fang Li. Qian San on the second floor carefully identified Fang Li and informed the others. Fang Li was taken to Gao Mu's room on the second floor, where someone pulled out a gun. Xing Han Zhu asked Fang Li to explain the reason behind his unauthorized release of the Japanese spy. Fang Li confronted Qian San about it, who hesitated and claimed that he was wearing a black shirt during the incident. Fang Li presented evidence, explaining that he had changed into a white shirt in the afternoon, and Qian San immediately changed his statement, saying he had made a mistake and it was a white shirt. Xing Han Zhu looked at Qian San, who was speechless and sat down. Gao Mu produced a pen with a Japanese military emblem and handed it to Fang Li. Suddenly, Qian San remembered that the Japanese spy had been taken to the Xinglong Warehouse.
