Episode 17 recap: Chen Ke Hai and Fang Li had a falling out.
Chen Ke Hai felt that it was inappropriate for Luo Bing to stay with him and suggested sending her back to her uncle's house or a hotel. However, Luo Bing strongly disagreed. Lao Duan informed Chen Ke Hai that a comrade had been arrested by the 76th Brigade and was critically ill, unlikely to survive until a rescue could be arranged.
Luo Bing took the initiative to pack Chen Ke Hai's belongings, but he publicly expressed his dislike for others touching his things. Fang Li entered a secret room filled with photos of Chen Ke Hai on the walls, reminding him of the night on Xiafei Road and the days of taking bullets and undergoing special training. He felt a mix of emotions in his heart.
Luo Bing used her saved money to buy Chen Ke Hai's favorite food. Li Tang walked in at that moment, and Luo Bing pretended not to recognize him. Taking the opportunity to leave, Luo Bing made an excuse, while Li Tang mentioned that Qiao San Min's mistress was about to give birth and that he was injured. He suggested that Chen Ke Hai go home and let the girl who was there earlier take care of him. In reality, Li Tang had received orders from Lao Jin to act as an intermediary and persuade Luo Bing to move in with Chen Ke Hai as soon as possible.
After being discharged from the hospital, Chen Ke Hai returned home. This time, Liu Yuan Dong saw a change in his usual cold demeanor and asked Chen Ke Hai to go in first. Chen Ke Hai arrived home and found that Luo Bing had already moved in. Luo Bing claimed that Li Tang had given her the key and instructed her to take care of the patient during this time.
Chen Ke Hai felt that his injuries were minor and didn't require anyone to take care of him. After finishing their meal, he planned to send Luo Bing away. However, Luo Bing said that the hotel had been raided, and her uncle's house had also been searched. She had nowhere else to go. She tearfully recounted the humiliation she endured at the hotel, where she was called a "flowery warbler." She ran back to her room, closing the door with a sudden change from tears to a joyful expression. To avoid alarming Fang Li, Chen Ke Hai decided to continue acting with Luo Bing.
After dinner, Chen Ke Hai fed the pigeons, and Luo Bing said she wouldn't stay for free. She insisted on doing housework and taking care of him. The next day, Luo Bing prepared breakfast early. Chen Ke Hai apologized to her, acknowledging that their intentions were well-meaning. However, he started nitpicking her cooking skills since she voluntarily offered to do housework, insisting that the food must be made according to his taste.
Chen Ke Hai went to work, and Luo Bing wanted to go grocery shopping. He insisted on separating and leaving the house together to avoid unnecessary misunderstandings. Before leaving, he instructed Luo Bing to clean every corner of the house. Lao Duan scolded Chen Ke Hai for taking a bullet for Fang Li without permission. Chen Ke Hai explained that he did it to dispel Fang Li's suspicions. He sought permission to keep Luo Bing at home, as kicking her out at that moment would raise suspicions.
A Communist Party member had been arrested by the 76th Brigade. Although he was critically ill and didn't require rescue, he possessed a list of organizations planted in the major banks of the International Settlement. It was crucial to obtain this list before his sacrifice.
A person was arrested by Xing Han Zhu because they had a long-standing conflict. In order to get close to him, they had to find an opportunity. While Luo Bing was cleaning, she insulted Chen Ke Hai and played a clever trick by using his toothbrush to clean the toilet.
Due to Fang Li's punishment, Xie Zi Feng changed his previously attentive attitude and started speaking coldly to Fang Li. Regarding Fang Li's request for medicine, Xie Zi Feng claimed that he couldn't get the medicine and mentioned that the gold and silver in his possession were gifts from himself. He also brought up his relationship with Ying Zuo and gained his support.
Fang Li left feeling disappointed because things were getting tight in Chongqing, and he still hadn't obtained the medicine. He wanted to see what trick Xie Zi Feng was up to. Chen Ke Hai returned home and almost slipped on the floor. While studying Xing Han Zhu's connections in his study, he found Luo Bing at the door and directly told her that outsiders were not allowed in the study.
Chen Ke Hai went to inspect the prison cells and learned that no one was allowed into one particular cell without a written order from Xing Han Zhu. Chen Ke Hai found Fang Li and asked him if he was involved in Zhou Bing De's death, which led to an argument between the two. Meanwhile, Xing Han Zhu happened to pass by and overheard their dispute.
Chen Ke Hai took the initiative to approach Xing Han Zhu and used the fact that they were both against Fang Li as leverage to secure a chance to talk to Xing Han Zhu alone. Luo Bing saw Chen Ke Hai and Xing Han Zhu getting into a car and immediately called Fang Li to inform him. At this moment, Xing Han Zhu mentioned that the news of Fang Li killing Zhou Bing De had already been reported to the Japanese, and it might be too late for any plea. However, Chen Ke Hai said he was willing to provide evidence to prove that Fang Li killed Zhou Bing De. He stated that he and Fang Li were not close because Fang Li had caused the death of someone they both loved.
Fang Li angrily rushed over with Lao Jin and asked Chen Ke Hai what he meant. Chen Ke Hai explained one by one, revealing that Fang Li intentionally let the Soviet agent go before and now had also killed Zhou Bing De. He also mentioned that he had known about the ambush on Xiafei Road and watched his classmates die in vain. These events were enough evidence to prove that Fang Li was with the Military Statistics Bureau.
Fang Li stated that he didn't join the 76th Brigade for nothing. Meanwhile, Chen Ke Hai had already arranged for his subordinates to find the bullet that killed Zhou Bing De in a safe house.
