Episode 32 recap: Xing Han Zhu interrogates Chen Ke Hai.
Fang Li sarcastically remarks that Chen Bin is the most powerful person in No. 76 and doesn't even take Li Shi Qun and Xing Han Zhu seriously. Li Shi Qun presents a photo showing Old Jin spying on others and expresses his intention to teach Fang Li and the others a lesson. Li Tang leads a team to disguise themselves as buyers and seize the opportunity to acquire Li Shi Qun's properties. They also leak the information to the press, creating the illusion that Li Shi Qun is preparing to flee with his assets. The more chaos, the better. Xing Han Zhu tortures Chen Ke Hai to force him to admit that Fang Li is a Kuomintang agent. At this moment, Fang Li arrives with a group of people to rescue Chen Ke Hai.
After listening to Chen Ke Hai's statement, Fang Li gives them shovels as a sign to exercise after dinner. The pit has been dug. Fang Li holds a gun from the bathroom and asks Chen Bin whom he wants to shoot. Chen Bin explains that it's a warning. Fang Li asks if it's a warning to Xing Han Zhu, a Kuomintang member warning a Communist member. Does he want to be the director? Fang Li angrily throws the photo of Chen Bin and Xing Han Zhu meeting together at him, asking him to make his own judgment.
Li Tang dances at the Bailemen nightclub. At this moment, he assumes that another one of his classmates has died and intentionally spills a glass of red wine on the floor. Chen Bin picks up the gun from the ground, collapses, and asks Fang Li why he doesn't trust him. He has no ulterior motives. Why is Chen Ke Hai just his brother? When he pointed the gun at himself to commit suicide, Chen Ke Hai intentionally stopped him, but Chen Bin pointed the gun at Chen Ke Hai, and Old Jin directly stabbed him with a knife. Chen Ke Hai rushes over to support Chen Bin, and before he dies, Chen Bin tells him that he can't hide it, and the next one to die will be him.
Chen Ke Hai returns home and finds Luo Bing sitting at the door waiting for him. They exchange glances and smile. He carefully removes the explosives, and Luo Bing suggests sending Xiao Bao to a colleague's house for a few days. If something like this happens again, they should bury him under the pig farm. Xing Han Zhu complains to Li Liqun that Chen Bin had obtained evidence, but now his whereabouts are unknown.
Li Liqun suggests interrogating Chen Ke Hai directly. If they don't show him some colors, they will eventually be overthrown. While saying this, he hands Xing Han Zhu a photo of the person tracking Old Jin. Li Tang notices that Changying Pharmacy and some other shops on Ningxing Street are closed. He uses the excuse of a burst pipe in the sewer to ask the driver to speed up.
Fang Li thinks it's normal for the businesses to be affected by the sewer, suggesting moving the hardware store as well. Li Tang admits that he has been thinking about the four of them who haven't returned. His guess was correct; it's all because Chen Bin chose the wrong side. He worked hard and earned money but never spent it, and his family is extremely poor with no one recognizing him.
Fang Li instructs Li Tang to take care of the arrangements and give the remaining money to his family. Chen Ke Hai is taken away by Li Liqun's men and brought directly to the interrogation room. Chen Ke Hai is familiar with the process and voluntarily submits to being tortured. Xing Han Zhu believes that Chen Ke Hai's humble behavior only makes him less of an enemy. The arrest is justified in the name of Chen Ke Hai killing Chen Bin to silence him, as Chen Bin had evidence of his Communist affiliation.
Fang Li learns that Chen Ke Hai has been arrested, and Li Tang plans to rescue him. Fang Li questions how the person delivering the message knows his whereabouts. Chen Ke Hai asks Xing Han Zhu if he has any evidence that he is a Communist and killed Chen Bin. It seems that Xing Han Zhu has nothing, so it's time to use severe interrogation methods.
Fang Li knew someone intentionally informed him, and if he rashly went to save Chen Ke Hai, they wouldn't be able to break through head-on. So they decided to strike Li Liqun at the root. They sent Li Tang and others to spread the news of selling off Li Liqun's properties and then leak it to the press, creating a bigger story about Li Liqun fleeing with his wealth.
Luo Bing waited anxiously at home for Chen Ke Hai but received a phone call informing her of his arrest. She hurriedly went to Fang Li's house in the middle of the night and told him that Chen Ke Hai's arrest was because of Fang Li. Liu Yuan Dong, their neighbor, was Xing Han Zhu's man and had been eavesdropping on them. He followed Chen Ke Hai and witnessed him meeting with Xing Han Zhu. However, Fang Li didn't seem concerned. Li Liqun had issued an arrest warrant, and Luo Bing expressed her worry for Chen Ke Hai, but Fang Li assured her that her task was to monitor Chen Ke Hai, not to interfere.
Chen Ke Hai continuously denied killing Chen Bin. Xing Han Zhu proposed a compromise where he would apologize to Chen Ke Hai if he would just identify Fang Li as a member of the Kuomintang. But Chen Ke Hai found it laughable that Xing Han Zhu didn't dare interrogate Fang Li directly and instead used him as a scapegoat.
On her way back home, Luo Bing thought about seeking help from Lao Duan at the pharmacy. Lao Duan noticed someone behind her making warning gestures, so Luo Bing turned and walked towards the cake shop on the opposite side. Old Jin, who was about to take out a dagger, realized he was being overly suspicious and left. Luo Bing took care of Xiao Bao at home, while Fang Li was torn about whether to rescue Chen Ke Hai. Lao Duan and others discussed their plan to rescue Chen Ke Hai.
The next day, Li Shi Qun went on a frenzy selling his properties, hoping to make headlines in Shanghai. Fang Li smiled contentedly. Li Shi Qun threw down the newspaper and handed the invitation letter to Xing Han Zhu, Gang Cun, and several Japanese people, inviting them to an event. Even if it was a trap, Xing Han Zhu had to attend. Since Chen Ke Hai's imprisonment, Fang Li had shown no activity. It seemed that Fang Li wasn't capable of much, so it was time to use Chen Ke Hai as an example.
Xing Han Zhu entered the interrogation room and issued a final ultimatum to Chen Ke Hai, who still refused to identify Fang Li as a Kuomintang member. Xing Han Zhu felt that Fang Li wasn't worth his loyalty. Fang Li monitored Li Liqun's meeting with Gang Cun. Lao Duan and other party comrades disguised as carriage drivers kept a close watch near Gate 76.
Xing Han Zhu grew impatient and stated that after Chen Ke Hai's death, there would be a statement implicating both the Communist Party and the Kuomintang in the hands of the Japanese. As the doctor was administering poison to Chen Ke Hai, Fang Li happened to walk in and directly staged a jailbreak with the help of some documents. Chen Ke Hai was rescued by Fang Li, who deliberately sat in the car to be noticed by Lao Duan before leaving with the comrades.
Li Liqun was hospitalized, and the doctor diagnosed him with amoebic parasites in his body. The incubation period was over, and his prognosis was grim. This virus could only be cultivated by the Japanese. Chen Ke Hai was taken to his home and Fang Li urged Luo Bing to take good care of him. He also implied that Luo Bing's mother's safety was of utmost importance.
Li Liqun asked Xing Han Zhu if he had a gun. His wife sensed his intentions, and Li Liqun advised her not to cause trouble with Fang Li. That way, their family would be safe. Later, Fang Li ordered Li Tang to arrest Liu Yuan Dong.
