Episode 8 recap: Fang Li plotted to kill Ma Shi Zhang.
Chen Ke Hai accidentally ran into Qiao San Min and learned the truth about the Xiafei Road incident. It was Fang Li who betrayed Qiao San Min, and Fang Li admitted to it without hesitation. Citizens discovered a Japanese soldier's body floating in the Huangpu River. At that moment, Li Tang came to apologize to Fang Li, admitting his negligence. Fang Li suppressed his anger. Ma Shi Zhang personally sought out Xing Zhan Zhang to put pressure on him. In order to find the culprit, Xing Zhan Zhang had to act first and report later.
Qiao San Min was unwilling to accept being used as bait by Fang Li in the past. He used his connection with Chen Ke Hai to lure Fang Li out. Fang Li arrived just in time, allowing Chen Ke Hai to escape with only a missing finger. Fang Li rescued Chen Ke Hai, but Chen Ke Hai pushed him away with a disgusted look in his eyes. Chen Ke Hai was taken to the hospital, where he confirmed with Fang Li if the Xiafei Road incident was true and questioned how Fang Li could betray his classmates. Fang Li explained that they could only survive if Qiao San Min acted as bait for them. The discovery of a dead body in the Huangpu River shocked the entire Shanghai Beach. Chen Ke Hai went out to get the newspaper but was quickly pulled back into the room by Fang Li, fearing that he might encounter another accident.
The Japanese authorities became furious about the body and demanded that the culprit be found within 21 hours. Ma Shi Zhang felt that Fang Li was too arrogant and had been suppressing Xing Han Zhu at every turn. In order to deal with Fang Li, Ma Shi Zhang assigned the task to Xing Han Zhu and fully supported him, even allowing him to act first and report later. Chen Shu prepared a bowl of chicken soup for Chen Ke Hai. While Chen Ke Hai was holding the newspaper, he unintentionally came across a unfamiliar face. Chen Shu mentioned that the person was Liu Yuan Dong, a university professor who moved in next door a year ago but was sent back to his hometown for writing subversive slogans. Due to Chen Ke Hai's task, Chen Shu increased his vigilance and paid attention to people in the vicinity.
The forensic examination determined that Yamada's cause of death was the injury on his neck, indicating that the perpetrator was skilled and professional. Xing Han Zhu ordered an investigation into Yamada's enemies and their recent activities, and discovered that apart from the Japanese, there were spies involved, and Xing Han Zhu intended to uncover the spies.
Fang Li arrived at the villa and asked Chen Ke Hai to hide in Suzhou for two days, but Chen Ke Hai felt that leaving at that moment would only raise suspicion. Xing Han Zhu questioned Chen Ke Hai and Fang Li about their whereabouts during that time, and his subordinate informed him that both Fang Li and Chen Ke Hai, as well as Yamada, were absent for a period of time. Xing Han Zhu immediately led his men to the villa, and Chen Ke Hai and Fang Li were taken to the outskirts.
Fang Li realized that Xing Han Zhu intended to silence them, as Xing Han Zhu wouldn't be able to explain if anything happened to them. Xing Han Zhu intentionally injured his subordinate's leg and framed Fang Li as trying to escape. Now, he intended to deal with Fang Li according to the law.
Li Tang brought a foreigner to testify and provide an alibi for Fang Li, stating that they saw the intoxicated Yamada at 8 o'clock. It turned out that in order to establish an alibi, Lao Jin wore Yamada's military uniform and his ring and deliberately bumped into the foreigner on the road. Xing Han Zhu, however, was not willing to let Fang Li go based on this testimony alone.
Just as he was about to continue pressuring Fang Li, his subordinate reported that the culprit had been found. At the thief's house, the police found Yamada's ring and precious jewelry, so they announced to the media that it was a case of a home invasion robbery, murder, and disposal of the body. Xing Han Zhu suspected that there was something fishy about it, as to why the culprit died without being interrogated, and yet the person was caught by the second department.
Chen Ke Hai pushed aside Fang Li and blamed him for taking the blame for killing an innocent person, causing him to feel melancholic when he saw a photo of the three of them from the past. Li Tang reported to Fang Li that Qiao San Min's wife had been found and was about to give birth. Fang Li instructed Li Tang to control his wife and then use the child as leverage against Qiao San Min.
A reporter from Zhonghua Daily came to meet Ma Shi Zhang. Zhang Xiaomin expressed a desire to make him the most successful candidate for mayor, as the frequent changes in previous mayors were likely due to a lack of attention. Therefore, the president wanted to focus on promoting Ma Shi Zhang. Zhang Xiaomin complied with Ma Shi Zhang's wishes and deliberately sat on his lap, mentioning a house at the pier where they could have private discussions. Ma Shi Zhang left through the back door with Zhang Xiaomin.
Xing Han Zhu received a phone call informing him that Ma Shi Zhang had been killed and found dead in a small house by the Huangpu River. Fang Li laughed upon seeing the news of Ma Shi Zhang's death in the newspaper, while Xing Han Zhu observed his actions from upstairs.
Luo Bing brought homemade pastries to visit Chen Ke Hai, and she took a sip without realizing it was coffee and ended up spitting it out because it was bitter. Grateful for Chen Ke Hai saving her life, she wanted to take care of him for a few days. However, Fang Li arrived and insulted Luo Bing, suspecting she had ulterior motives. Angered, Luo Bing splashed water on Fang Li and left.
Due to the investigation into Yamada's death causing a misunderstanding, Xing Han Zhu was advised by Li Shi Qun to approach the investigation into Ma Shi Zhang's death more cautiously. Chen Ke Hai suspected that Fang Li was responsible for Ma Shi Zhang's death, fully exposing himself to Xing Han Zhu and Li Shi Qun. Fang Li claimed that the plan had changed and he had no choice but to take action.
Fang Li and Chen Ke Hai went to enjoy themselves in Shanghai. The people at No. 76 not only showed no sadness but also treated Ma Shi Zhang's death as a casual topic of conversation. Fang Li killed Ma Shi Zhang because he posed a threat to Fang Li's financial interests by strictly regulating Western medicine inspections.
