Episode 1 recap: Reunion of Guan Xue and her Lifesaver.
1944, Harbin. Guan Xue, wearing a coat, walked weakly along the street. She entered a coffee shop, ordered a cup of coffee, and sat down. Soon, someone approached her using a secret code. It was Lao Duan. Guan Xue was responsible for escorting him out of the city, and time was running out. However, Guan Xue was very weak, having been shot in the abdomen. The wound was bleeding continuously. Upon seeing this, Lao Duan quickly helped her onto a yellow cart.
Song Zhuowen had been tracking the two of them since outside the coffee shop. Lao Duan brought Guan Xue to a safe place, but accidentally noticed the imprint of a watch on her hand. Immediately, he became cautious and hid in a room. Guan Xue, seeing his reaction, no longer covered her painful wound but instead grabbed a chair and started smashing the door. Inside the room, Lao Duan calmly burned the documents.
Soon, Guan Xue's companions rushed in to help, while Song Zhuowen did his best to cover Lao Duan's escape. Guan Xue's group ended up empty-handed and, instead, Guan Xue was shot by Song Zhuowen. During his escape, Lao Duan was accidentally hit by Pan Yue's car and ultimately fell into the hands of the secret police. However, due to the destruction of the intelligence, the operation did not yield any advantageous information. Guan Xue vented her anger.
Underground Communist Party member Song Zhuowen completed his mission and removed his duckbill cap to continue his undercover work. Guan Xue was shot in the arm but did not go to the hospital for treatment. Instead, she gritted her teeth and extracted the bullet herself before bandaging the wound. Hu Bin brought soup for Guan Xue, but she didn't drink a drop and warned her not to let anyone know about her defeat today.
Lao Duan was captured without saying a word and mercilessly mocked Guan Xue.
Communist underground party member Qian Chongli and Song Zhuowen exchanged intelligence. There was a traitor in the mountains, but Guan Xue was clever enough to deceive Lao Duan. Lao Duan was subjected to severe torture. Guan Xue used threats and enticements to make him reveal his superiors and subordinates. In order to keep him alive, Guan Xue and Pan Yue came up with a cruel method—they found an acupuncturist to needle him. The pain from this was even more intense than the severe torture.
However, Lao Duan was seriously injured, and as soon as the doctor administered the needle, he died. Guan Xue became very angry but still had someone send Dr. Shi back home. However, Dr. Shi's identity was extraordinary. He got off the car halfway to pass on information. Guan Xue realized this and immediately intercepted the car carrying the corpse and sent people to investigate Dr. Shi.
Dr. Shi brought Lao Duan's body back from the desolate wilderness. On the bumpy road, he desperately administered acupuncture, trying to save his life and obtain the final piece of intelligence. Dr. Shi, with a sense of impending doom, went to retrieve the intelligence, and he also asked his comrades to go to the hospital and bring chicken soup to his wife, who was about to give birth. Lao Duan's body disappeared, and they learned that his house was on fire. Guan Xue immediately led people to rush to the train station.
Dr. Shi obtained the intelligence from Lao Duan's house and hurriedly went to meet with his comrades to deliver the message. Once on the train, Dr. Shi became restless. Song Zhuowen, who was on patrol, signaled to him, "Run fast!" Without hesitation, Dr. Shi sprinted away. Coincidentally, a Japanese person who didn't understand Chinese caught the attention of the secret police, providing Dr. Shi with the opportunity to transmit the intelligence.
Song Zhuowen helped control the Japanese person but also reminded Guan Xue of a familiar face. Long ago, she had lived in the mud, and it was him who saved her. Guan Xue thought she had encountered her savior, and tears welled up in her eyes, but she still spoke coldly and asked Song Zhuowen to get in her car.
Although Song Zhuowen didn't understand why, he nodded with a smile.
