Episode 9 recap: Shen Huai Jin expresses his feelings to Li Cai Wei.
Li Cai Wei lights a sky lantern for Shen Huai Jin and asks him to make a wish while looking at the lantern. Shen Huai Jin is deeply moved because today happens to be the anniversary of his mother's passing. His mother had suffered years of mistreatment from the Liu family within the palace and finally passed away when he was ten years old. Before she died, his mother entrusted him with the desire to escape from the palace and live a happy life.
Li Cai Wei suddenly realizes the truth behind Shen Huai Jin's recent erratic behavior. It is because he wants the prince to drive him away, as per his mother's wishes. However, the prince understands his son very well and believes that he is longing for his mother, so he doesn't blame him. Shen Huai Jin tells Li Cai Wei that after going through so much, he has decided that he can no longer run away. He has grown up and has the ability to protect the people he loves.
Li Cai Wei asks him who he loves, and Shen Huai Jin answers that it's her. He lists various instances of Li Cai Wei's kindness towards him. Li Cai Wei hurriedly tries to explain, but Shen Huai Jin refuses to listen, saying that he understands her feelings for him. Li Cai Wei is speechless, and Shen Huai Jin presents her with a peace button left by his mother. Li Cai Wei recognizes the peace button from her time at the filming base and thinks it is the key to return to the modern era. She accepts it, but no matter how many times she tries, it doesn't work.
She realizes that the most urgent task at hand is how to overthrow the Liu family and save Shen Huai Jin, so that they can break the cycle and leave this place to return to the modern era.
