Episode 5 recap: Gu Yuan and Che Su Wei found themselves in danger in the black market.
After their identities were exposed, Gu Yuan and Che Su Wei had to disguise themselves and infiltrate the black market for further investigation. In the makeup room of the magic troupe, they discovered the paper figures. While examining the paper figures, they heard a child's voice and successfully located a child who was locked behind the makeup room.
Before Che Su Wei could rescue the child, the troupe leader attacked her, and both she and Gu Yuan were captured. After their capture, the troupe leader performed a magic trick for them, expressing his intention to turn them into human pigs and place them in a vase. Fortunately, the timely arrival of the paper figures saved them.
As the magic tent caught fire, the troupe leader instructed others to extinguish the flames. The paper figures arrived in time and injured the troupe leader, rescuing Gu Yuan and Che Su Wei. They also played a crucial role in dismantling the child trafficking gang. After the capture of the troupe leader, he confessed to the child trafficking activities, clarifying that they only targeted unattended children and dared not touch Sun Dashuai's children.
Xiao Zhi did not fall into the hands of the human traffickers. However, Sun Dashuai's mother, anxious about her missing grandson, fell ill and passed away. Gu Yuan and Che Su Wei had no choice but to visit Sun Dashuai's home, explain the situation to him, and pay respects to the elderly. They revealed the involvement of the paper figures in their rescue and emphasized that the paper figures were not responsible for taking Xiao Zhi, urging Sun Dashuai not to suspect them any longer.
Realizing his mistake in accusing the paper figures, Sun Dashuai personally went to apologize to them and gave them a sum of money to create a set of paper figures for Xiao Zhi and his mother, as a farewell gift. While requesting the paper figures to make the paper figures, Sun Dashuai unintentionally heard a nursery rhyme from Aqiang's place, a rhyme that he had only taught to Xiao Zhi. This made him suspect that the paper figures might still be involved in Xiao Zhi's disappearance.
When the paper figures went to deliver the paper figures to Sun Dashuai, he arranged for a child to dress up as a ghost and scare them. However, to his surprise, the paper figures showed no fear. As the paper figures were not afraid of ghosts, Sun Dashuai locked them up and tried to frighten them with the thing they feared the most—cockroaches. But the paper figures remained silent. Aqiang's mother, worried about the paper figures' absence, reported the incident to the local authorities. Gu Yuan and Che Su Wei had no choice but to demand the release of the paper figures from Sun Dashuai, but he adamantly denied having taken them.
Gu Yuan didn't have a search warrant, so he couldn't demand the release of the paper figures from Sun Dashuai. Instead, he asked Sun Dashuai not to harm Aqiang. Gu Yuan applied for a search warrant from the Public Security Bureau, but they refused to grant it. At that moment, Yan Jun Jie brought them a box, saying it was left outside the police station. Gu Yuan opened the box and found a shoe inside, which belonged to Xiao Zhi. They had to go find Sun Dashuai immediately.
Upon seeing the shoe, Sun Dashuai accidentally revealed that Aqiang had confessed something, but he still didn't know where Xiao Zhi was being held. Gu Yuan explained that Aqiang was not the one who kidnapped Xiao Zhi, but Sun Dashuai refused to release him. They had to find a way to save Xiao Zhi first. Che Su Wei noticed a foul odor of decay coming from Xiao Zhi's shoe, suspecting that Xiao Zhi had come into contact with someone who frequently dealt with corpses, indirectly causing the odor to transfer.
Based on the clue from the shoe, Che Su Wei asked for Yan Jun Jie's help in finding the undertaker called Er Pi Jiang, but Xiao Zhi was not found there. Che Su Wei saw a body that Er Pi Jiang was currently working on, but it wasn't Xiao Zhi. Meanwhile, Gu Yuan discovered disturbed soil in Er Pi Jiang's backyard, so they decided to investigate further by digging it up.
As soon as Er Pi Jiang realized his secret had been exposed, he immediately knelt down and begged for mercy. Gu Yuan and the others understood that there must be something fishy, but they didn't expect it to be unrelated to Xiao Zhi. Er Pi Jiang had been stealing valuable items from the deceased and hiding them in his backyard, which turned out to be a minor issue. Gu Yuan and the others had no choice but to go back and talk to Sun Dashuai again, hoping to obtain some clues from Aqiang.
Gu Yuan and Che Su Wei returned to Sun Dashuai's house once more, seeking his agreement to release Aqiang, but Sun Dashuai refused. They had to have dinner first. While having the meal, Che Su Wei noticed a special mark on the chopsticks and realized that everything in Sun Dashuai's house was custom-made. She had seen the same mark on the items collected by Er Pi Jiang from the deceased.
