Episode 8 recap: Gu Yuan disguised himself as a miner to gather clues.

Old Ji reported the events of the night to the boss, but the boss didn't believe him. The boss thought Old Ji was stealing and wanted to kill him. Zheng Tai, the assistant of the gold mine owner, reminded him about the legend of corpse chasing in Xiangxi. It's possible that what Old Ji encountered last night was a corpse, and the bullets they shot might have hit the body. The assistant believed that the two people who died at the mine were from Xiangxi, so the legend of corpse chasing could be true. It's also possible that someone used the legend as a cover to smuggle gold from the mine. Therefore, Zheng Tai instructed his assistant to investigate thoroughly.

A body was found in the Huangpu River, and after examination, it was identified as Fan Chuangui from Hunan, who had been working at the Boxing Gold Mine. Before his death, Fan Chuangui wrote a letter to his hometown, claiming that he was going to make a fortune and would soon be able to return home. However, he unexpectedly died in Shanghai, and some metal objects were found inside his body.

Gu Yuan wanted to investigate Fan Chuangui's case, but the incident happened in the lawless Sha Prefecture area, where they couldn't intervene. They had to find another way. Yan Junjie returned to Sha Prefecture after taking the exam and went shopping with a few friends. They played games at a stall to win rewards but ended up offending the stall owner.

The stall owner informed Liu Fei's henchman about Yan Junjie's winnings, and soon they were chased to their home. Yan Junjie wasn't afraid of Liu Fei's henchman at all and believed that he had rightfully won the items. He didn't think he had done anything wrong. However, his brother Yan Junkang was afraid of Liu Fei's people.

Yan Junkang was afraid of offending Liu Fei and also worried about Yan Junjie's safety. He had no choice but to kneel down and apologize, promising to compensate with ten taels of silver to ensure Yan Junjie's safety. However, Yan Junjie didn't appreciate it at all. Dongmei heard about Yan Junkang's trouble and immediately went to check on him. She happened to come across Yan Junkang and Yan Junjie arguing, so she advised Yan Junkang not to worry about Yan Junjie's matters and to focus on resolving their marriage arrangements and the dowry.

Yan Junkang was still angry and didn't want to listen to Dongmei. He scolded her and made her leave. Gu Yuan disguised himself as a worker looking for a job and went to Sha Prefecture to gather information. He happened to meet Erwa, who was having a meal, and struck up a conversation with him, asking Erwa to introduce him to work at the gold mine. Gu Yuan followed Erwa to the mine and coincidentally encountered a woman looking for her husband. He took the opportunity to ask Erwa about any missing persons at the mine and also inquired about Fan Chuangui.

Erwa didn't know that Fan Chuangui had died because Fan Chuangui's luggage was still there, so they didn't suspect Erwa's disappearance.

Gu Yuan chatted for a long time and inquired about the corpse-chasing matter with Erwa. He then went to the casino to find Old Ji, who had been expelled from the mine. Unexpectedly, he ran into Yan Junjie, who was gambling there.

Yan Junjie won a significant amount of money at the casino but was caught and taken to the Sha Prefecture Police Station. Surprisingly, the police chief, Chen Dalu, announced that Yan Junjie had been hired by the Sha Prefecture Police. Yan Junjie became a policeman and was about to interrogate a prisoner when he discovered that the prisoner was Gu Yuan. Gu Yuan signaled to Yan Junjie not to reveal his identity, and Yan Junjie played along with him, engaging in casual conversation.

Che Suwei and Ren Mengyao came to find Yan Junjie and scolded him, demanding that he release Gu Yuan. After Gu Yuan was freed, Che Suwei informed them about their mission in Sha Prefecture and asked Yan Junjie for help in investigating the case.

Upon learning about the task, Yan Junjie interrogated Old Ji and asked about the records of people entering and leaving the gold mine. Gu Yuan was worried that if Yan Junjie found out, it would affect their investigation. Che Suwei trusted Yan Junjie and believed in his abilities, and since they had no jurisdiction in Sha Prefecture, they had to rely on Yan Junjie.

Yan Junjie gathered some information about the mine and discovered that miners frequently went missing, but the police station turned a blind eye to it. Yan Junjie learned from Old Ji about the whereabouts of the registration book and Gu Yuan immediately questioned whether Yan Junjie could pick the lock and handle the theft of the registration book himself.

That night, Yan Junjie and Gu Yuan went to steal the registration book. Just as they opened the safe, they alerted the guards. However, they did not find the registration book inside the safe. While Gu Yuan was searching for the book, he discovered some white objects and noticed another person in black clothes. Gu Yuan and Yan Junjie tried to hide in a room, but they ended up fighting with the person in black clothes. In the end, Gu Yuan was knocked unconscious, the person in black clothes escaped through the window, and they were captured by the guards.
