Episode 5 recap: Rong Yu went out on a journey, and the Crown Prince helped He Jiu Ling escape.
Rong Yu carefully wrote and illustrated a book, using his imagination to depict interesting stories of scholars and beauties. He Jiu Ling was lying on the bed, engrossed in the book, and greatly admired Rong Yu as a scholar. His sister-in-law gently applied medicine to He Jiu Ling's wounds while patiently persuading and comforting him. She informed him that Rong Yu had come to the mansion today to bring him something. However, upon hearing Rong Yu's name, He Jiu Ling instinctively felt repulsed. His sister-in-law softly told him that ever since she had returned to the capital, Rong Yu had silently been protecting her. Such a good man was truly rare.
His sister-in-law spoke from her own experience, recounting how she and his eldest brother had developed love after their marriage. She believed that He Jiu Ling would also fall in love with Rong Yu as they spent time together. In two days, it would be the Qixi Festival (Chinese Valentine's Day), and He Jiu Ling remembered that she had made plans with her sister from Shangzhou to meet on that day and explore the capital together. So she pleaded with her sister-in-law to find a way to lift her father's restriction on her movements.
Coincidentally, He Liang was about to accompany Rong Yu outside. After hearing He Jiu Ling's request, Rong Yu asked He Liang to lift the restrictions on He Jiu Ling. On the day of the Qixi Festival, He Jiu Ling arrived early at the marketplace, and Rong Yu disguised himself as he had appeared on the day they met in Shangzhou. When He Jiu Ling saw him, she joyfully approached, but her emotions collapsed again when Rong Yu removed his hat, revealing his true identity. She refused to believe that Rong Yu was the sister she had met in Shangzhou. No matter how Rong Yu explained, He Jiu Ling couldn't accept this fact and ran away crying.
He Jiu Ling ran back home in tears, and her martial brother was waiting for her at the entrance. Jiu Ling rushed into his arms and cried bitterly. Her martial brother had come to bid her farewell, and he told her that he had thought of a good way to help her break off the engagement. After much deliberation, Rong Yu made a decision. He went to the palace overnight and obtained the Emperor's permission to annul his marriage with Jiu Ling.
Rong Yu went to the He's residence and presented the annulment document to He Liang. He Liang interpreted it as a sign that Rong Yu no longer liked Jiu Ling. He meaningfully stated that Jiu Ling was only seventeen this year and had grown up on the mountain, accompanied by snakes and insects. She didn't understand love or affection. However, Rong Yu said that it was precisely because he loved her that he set her free.
He Liang refused to accept Rong Yu's annulment document. During the meal, he solemnly advised his daughter that Rong Yu liked her more than she imagined. It wasn't easy to encounter someone who could protect Jiu Ling like Rong Yu did, so he urged her not to do anything reckless. He Jiu Ling took out the medicine left by her martial brother, which he claimed would make Rong Yu stop loving her when she used it on him.
Jiu Ling tried to sneak out but was intercepted by her eldest brother, Chen Zhou. Rong Yu arrived at the palace, and the Crown Prince, seeing him from afar, shouted and chased after him, calling him the father of the Crown Princess. Rong Yu asked him why he called him that way.
The Crown Prince said that He Jiu Ling has already been betrothed to him as the Crown Princess, even before their daughter is born.
Rong Yu's purpose for this journey was to bid farewell to the Emperor. He planned to go to the Cold Mountain Temple for a period of cultivation. The Crown Prince believed that since Rong Yu had successfully rescued He Jiu Ling from Prince Xunnan, he should stay by her side and protect her well. Rong Yu didn't say much and took his leave. He bid farewell to his younger uncle, Rong Jiang, and handed him a wooden box, asking him to deliver it to the He residence later.
Unable to leave the house, He Jiu Ling suddenly thought of the Crown Prince. She wrote a letter and sent someone to deliver it to him, inviting him to her home. The Crown Prince, excited upon receiving the invitation from He Jiu Ling, happily went to the He residence. Rong Yu set off in a carriage, and when their old enemy, Cheng Chong, noticed and secretly followed them. The guards who spotted Cheng Chong quickly went back to report to Chen Zhou.
The Crown Prince informed He Jiu Ling that Rong Yu was going to the Cold Mountain Temple for cultivation. He Jiu Ling was surprised because if Rong Yu left, her plans would be disrupted. She pleaded with the Crown Prince for help. He Liang had prepared many delicious foods for the Crown Prince, but he was puzzled when he saw the Crown Prince's men hurriedly carrying a large box away. He Liang asked what was inside the box, but the Crown Prince only said it was a fresh gift from He Jiu Ling and insisted that He Liang not open and inspect it.
In the outskirts, He Jiu Ling emerged from the box and bid farewell to the Crown Prince before hastily chasing after Rong Yu. Rong Yu sat in the carriage, feeling melancholic. He Shan suggested stopping for food and finding an inn to stay since it was getting late. Rong Yu absentmindedly agreed to get off the carriage. However, he was surprised to find He Jiu Ling standing right there under the carriage.
