Episode 12 recap: Cui Lan was murdered.
Second Madam, dressed in mourning attire, shouted in fear, "Stop pretending to be a ghost!" Shen Xiuning suspected that Cui Lan was the culprit and was discussing Cui Lan's methods of killing with Jiang Li. Li Canglang rushed over to inform them that Cui Lan had been killed. Upon arriving at the scene, Jiang Li discovered that Cui Lan was wearing red clothes and her corpse looked exactly like that of Lord Jiang.
Jiang Li recalled the partially burned letter she had seen at the old Li residence, with the signature bearing the character "Lan." She suspected that the letter was written by Cui Lan to Chunyan. In order to clarify their relationship, Jiang Li dressed in red clothes and pretended to be the ghost of Chunyan to scare Cui Lan. Jiang Li's speculation was correct. Cui Lan had carried guilt for Chunyan's death, and under Jiang Li's intimidation, she finally revealed the truth. Chunyan had been raped by Lord Jiang, and Cui Lan happened to witness it from outside the door. However, she didn't come forward to save Chunyan in order to protect herself.
While playing the ghost, Jiang Li sprained her foot. So Shen Xiuning carried her on his back. When they were near the county office, they unexpectedly encountered Wan Shitong's daughter, Wanyan. Wanyan was standing there, seemingly waiting for someone. While chatting with Wanyan, they learned that a house had caught fire due to a child playing with flint. This made Jiang Li realize that the self-ignition of the letter was caused by someone placing flint on it.
Furthermore, when the young miss of the Jiang family burned paper, the paper suddenly displayed the words "vengeful ghost seeking justice." Jiang Li suspected that someone had dipped the paper in vinegar and wrote those words because Cui Lan had bought those papers. Thus, their suspicions once again turned towards Cui Lan. However, before they could interrogate her, Li Canglang rushed over to inform them that Cui Lan had been killed. They arrived at the scene and saw Cui Lan wearing red clothes, her corpse mirroring Lord Jiang's exactly.
