Gu Xinghe examines the body and confirms that it is indeed a case of suicide by hanging. Bao Rourou suggests that it's possible someone hanged Xiao Daren, but Gu Xinghe points out that there would likely be signs of struggle if that were the case. There is also a poem on Xiao Daren's arm related to the mermaid. Gu Xinghe speculates that what Bao Rourou saw was probably a government ship, all of which are searching for mermaids.
Liu Yu comes to find Gu Xinghe, claiming innocence. After Xiao Daren's death, Xiao Madam believed that she was the one who killed him, causing her business to suffer. Liu Yu admits to having a connection with Xiao Daren but denies being the killer. Yi Qifeng also knows Liu Yu, which makes Lu Qing'er jealous. Liu Yu explains that on the day Xiao Daren came to see her, Xiao Madam also showed up, and they had a heated argument. Xiao Daren ended up driving Xiao Madam away.
Gu Xinghe goes to question Xiao Madam, who claims that Liu Yu instigated Xiao Daren to divorce her, causing the argument. Xiao Daren's younger brother was also present at the time. He says that when he saw his sister-in-law, she was yelling at them, and he took the money to repay gambling debts. Lu Qing'er mentions investigating the gambling den.
Gu Xinghe believes that since this matter is likely connected to the palace, someone may have used the commotion at the restaurant as a diversion to cover their tracks.
