Episode 3 recap: Gu Xinghe investigates the clues.
Gu Xinghe knows that Doctor Fan is actually a fake doctor. He didn't want to reveal it earlier because he was afraid of being exposed. Wang Liuhang feels embarrassed by Doctor Fan's actions. The magistrate discovers that several of his fish are missing, while Bao Rourou realizes that she has only eaten two of them and wonders how three could be missing. Bao Rourou hides here at midnight and sees Gu Xinghe, accusing him of being a fish thief. However, Gu Xinghe explains that he is here to investigate.
Suddenly, Gu Xinghe feels unwell and collapses. Bao Rourou helps him inside and notices that Gu Xinghe's body feels unusually hot. She realizes that her own body temperature is lower and decides to help him cool down. The next day, Gu Xinghe wakes up and finds Bao Rourou holding him, which shocks him. Gu Xinghe realizes that the time of death for the body doesn't make sense. He performs a nitric test on some nitrate and confirms that it can preserve ice. There must have been an ice block placed near the body, slowing down its decomposition.
Gu Xinghe discovers that an elderly man has delivered something to Chen Yan. The man explains that Chen Yan had given him tea leaves, and he was returning the favor. Gu Xinghe learns that Chen Yan also gave tea leaves to Zhao Si, but Zhao Si's house doesn't have any tea leaves. Gu Xinghe carefully searches and finds remnants of tea leaves in the courtyard. The leaves actually turn out to be from the "Broken Heart" plant, which looks similar to tea leaves and was disguised as tea.
Gu Xinghe believes that Chen Yan is the one behind this incident.
