Episode 8 recap: Gu Xinghe agrees to take Bao Rourou to Shengjing.
Bao Rourou goes to find Yi Qifeng and asks him if he knows about the merchant ship incident. Yi Qifeng says he went to Java. Gu Xinghe arrives, and Bao Rourou starts crying, asking Gu Xinghe to take her to Shengjing. Bao Rourou goes back first, and Yi Qifeng finds a pearl here that looks exactly like the mermaid pearl given by the emperor. Yi Qifeng secretly spills water outside Bao Rourou's door, trying to catch her in the act, but Gu Xinghe stops him in time.
Wang Buliuhang thinks that finding the mermaid would be a good thing and has a plan to make Gu Xinghe pretend to be dead here. Bao Rourou comes over, and Wang Buliuhang says that only the mermaid can save his life. Bao Rourou is surprised because her father never mentioned that mermaids could cure illnesses. Gu Xinghe wakes up and realizes he was deceived, so he angrily leaves.
Bao Rourou previously took the mermaid pearl and gave it to Lu Qing'er. Lu Qing'er notices something is off and comes to find Bao Rourou. It's about to rain, so Bao Rourou has to go back. Lu Qing'er brings water and intends to wash Bao Rourou's hands but intentionally spills it on her feet. Lu Qing'er uses the excuse of wanting to change Bao Rourou's shoes and socks, but Gu Xinghe arrives and drives Lu Qing'er away directly.
Gu Xinghe says that after the Chinese New Year, he will take Bao Rourou, as it is too cold to go now. Bao Rourou tells others about recent events, and someone remarks that if she's in such a situation, it means she likes someone.
