Episode 13 recap: Liu Li successfully became friends with Mirror Maiden.
While Liu Li and Pei Xing Jian were still discussing matters, they were unaware that someone had been eavesdropping on them from the rooftop. The next day, Pei Xing Jian began handling official documents. He planned to start saving their expenses from the moment they woke up. Although it would be challenging to keep his promises and satisfy everyone, luckily the first step was to cut back on relatively minor expenses, which didn't face much opposition.
Wang Jun Meng praised them for handling the situation well, but Feng Chong Yu felt extremely resentful. Naturally, he didn't want Pei Xing Jian to replace him. During a game of chess, Pei Xing Jian also noticed someone eavesdropping from the rooftop. The woman he was playing chess with was named Mrs. Liu. Pei Xing Jian intentionally made his plans for the next day clear because he had already noticed the presence of someone on the rooftop.
Later, Feng Chong Yu was informed about this incident, and he instructed his subordinate to continue monitoring Pei Xing Jian. Liu Li went to the market to buy fabric, but her real intention was to gather information about the entire market. In fact, Feng Chong Yu had taken away all the best fabrics in the entire Western Province. He only wanted to use them for his mother's memorial. When he was young, he used to weave the best fabrics for himself, so he had a sentimental attachment to them.
After returning home, Feng Chong Yu saw his father tending to flowers and plants, so he went to help. Feng Chong Yu didn't want to go back because his mother's anniversary was approaching, and he wanted to remind his father not to go with him. However, his father refused. Later, his father reminded Feng Chong Yu to be cautious of Pei Xing Jian, as Pei Xing Jian was not an ordinary person, and they mustn't underestimate him.
Early in the morning, Pei Xing Jian set out, but Feng Chong Yu had someone follow him closely.
Liu Li originally went to meet Mirror Maiden but learned that she was in a bad mood. At first, Liu Li didn't understand the reason, but later she found out from a maid that Mirror Maiden was upset because she wanted to find a bowl of porridge with the same taste as the one made by the late Lady. Mirror Maiden was angry because no one could replicate the same bowl of porridge. When Liu Li entered, Mirror Maiden didn't give her a warm reception. However, Liu Li remained calm and slowly cooked the porridge, hoping to recreate the taste of Mirror Maiden's mother's porridge. Liu Li then brought the prepared porridge to Mirror Maiden's room.
At first, Mirror Maiden paid no attention, but when Liu Li opened the lid, Mirror Maiden recognized the familiar aroma. In fact, Liu Li had also lived in the Western Province during her childhood, so she was familiar with the situation there and could make the same porridge. Liu Li not only missed her own mother but also returned to the Western Province with her loved one, only to find that her mother was no longer there.
Meanwhile, Pei Xing Jian was gathering information about the surrounding towns and villages to gain a better understanding of the current situation in the Western Province. The common people praised Feng Chong Yu for his contributions because the taxes were reduced, and he helped them build houses, improving their lives.
However, some families were still very poor and had to sell their livestock to pay the taxes. Mirror Maiden's attitude towards Liu Li improved because she cooked a bowl of porridge. Before leaving, Liu Li told her to take care of herself, as it was going to snow soon and she should hurry back. When Pei Xing Jian returned home, he saw his wife by the window. He knew that Liu Li had come to properly commemorate her mother, but due to his busy official duties, they didn't have time to go out together.
After a few days, Pei Xing Jian had gained a good understanding of the entire market in the Western Province. He also bought some Buddhist scriptures to calculate the paper needed by making copies of them.
