Episode 11 recap: Mei Kaishao investigates the identity of the medicine merchant.
It turns out that Cui, the steward, was already hanged on the ceiling beam. Mei Kaishao is not afraid. Murong Hanbing then releases his hand covering Mei Kaishao's eyes. The two of them examine the body and discover that Cui was hanged after being killed. If it were a suicide, there would have been signs of struggle, but there are no traces on the ceiling beam.
Now that Princess Jiugong has encountered an incident, the city gates are closed. The medicine merchant must still be in the city. They gather the personal guards, called Shadows, and instruct them to start investigating suspicious individuals along the streets. Murong Hanbing rides a horse with Mei Kaishao and leaves the city to handle the case. Along the way, they encounter a man carrying a bamboo basket on his back. They inquire if he has seen any suspicious individuals passing through here. The old man shakes his head, indicating that he has never seen anyone. However, Mei Kaishao notices something from his shoes and deliberately suggests buying the old man's melon. She also mentions that his boots and clothes don't match.
When the old man realizes that his secret is exposed, he tries to draw his sword and attack Mei Kaishao, but Murong Hanbing stops him and successfully captures him. They interrogate him about the origin of the herbs and learn that they come from Liu, the captain of the Ministry of War. The Emperor is furious when he hears the news. He never expected someone to dare to plot against his prince. The Emperor blames himself for not protecting Murong Hanbing. In the past, the court was filled with military officials, but only Murong Hanbing proposed the imperial examination to select talented individuals, resulting in a series of assassination attempts.
The Emperor also states that he can no longer tolerate such actions, and he will set an example by punishing the guilty. Otherwise, he would be unworthy of being a father. The Emperor also respects Murong Hanbing's opinion. Murong Hanbing once again suggests reopening the imperial examination.
