Episode 15 recap: Professor Ding clarified that Chen Hui did not plagiarize Wang Kai and resigned out of necessity.
In the evening, Professor Ding Ming Zhang was still studying the surgical plan Chen Hui had done for Yu Yang. At that time, Section Chief Zhang Ming came to bring him fruit and tea. Professor Ding Ming Zhang asked Zhang Ming about Chen Hui's situation and learned that Chen Hui had been fired from the hospital because of the plagiarism incident involving his own paper. Professor Ding Ming Zhang was somewhat shocked after hearing this, and he made a decision to have Zhang Ming arrange a meeting with President Pan, insisting that Chen Hui must be present. President Pan was also working overtime, and Jiang Yuan came to inform him of Professor Ding's intentions, arguing against letting him and Chen Hui meet in case a conflict arose. President Pan suggested that the two of them meet with Professor Ding first.
Yuan Ye and Ke Ai came to find Chen Hui, but despite being in the room, Chen Hui refused to open the door. Yuan Ye was very worried and urged Chen Hui to bravely come forward and clarify the situation, emphasizing that if it was determined that he had plagiarized the paper, he would never be able to hold a scalpel again. Chen Hui listened to Yuan Ye's heartfelt words in the room, tears streaming down his face. Professor Ding arrived at the president's office and found Chen Hui absent, stating that such a conversation would be meaningless. President Pan finally managed to contact Chen Hui, and He Tong and Yuan Ye accompanied him to meet Professor Ding.
Upon seeing Chen Hui, Professor Ding became emotionally charged and asked Chen Hui to keep his distance. First, Professor Ding declared that he had never reported Chen Hui for plagiarizing the paper, and therefore, Chen Hui's resignation had nothing to do with him. President Pan asked a follow-up question, inquiring if Professor Ding meant to say that Chen Hui did not plagiarize at all. Professor Ding stated that it was not important and did not directly answer the question. Instead, he angrily accused Chen Hui of being an ungrateful person. While Chen Hui was interning, Professor Ding provided him with a national-level laboratory, and senior colleagues worked hard to assist him. However, when it came time to publish the paper, Chen Hui adamantly refused to include the names of the senior colleagues before his own on the paper.
Chen Hui expressed his confusion, and Professor Ding angrily retorted that Chen Hui should have no reason to be confused, considering that the senior colleagues lost their jobs, had their household registration invalidated, and even got divorced. Chen Hui said that he now understood and should include Professor Ding's name at the front of the paper, but not the senior colleagues'. Chen Hui then left, leaving Professor Ding sitting on the chair in frustration. President Pan had already understood the cause of the situation and believed that as a mentor, it was unreasonable for Professor Ding to ask students to hand over their research results to another student. It was illogical and fostered chaos in the academic community. Considering everyone who contributed to menial tasks as authors of a paper was absurd. Chen Hui's difficulty in communication stemmed from being a patient with moderate Asperger's syndrome, and as Professor Ding and the other older individuals, they should be understanding and caring towards Chen Hui.
Professor Ding calmed down and pondered President Pan's words. He felt that what President Pan said made sense, but when Chen Hui left without giving him and others a chance to communicate, he felt frustrated.
Meanwhile, Wang Kai was taking care of his mother in the ward when he suddenly received a list of personnel participating in the evaluation for associate senior titles in the work group. His name was not on the list. He went to see Section Chief Zhang Ming, who informed him that although his issues had been resolved and there were no violations, he was still reported for suspected bribery, and his attendance and performance had consistently been at the bottom. As a result, half of his year-end bonus might be deducted.
Wang Kai became angry upon hearing this. Just then, Yuan Ye hurriedly came and informed him that his mother's condition was critical. Wang Kai rushed to the ward, but the attending doctor couldn't determine the cause of his mother's worsening condition. Yuan Ye thought of Chen Hui and sent him the test results. After studying the results, Chen Hui discovered the cause of the illness. Wang Kai hurriedly went to find Chen Hui.
Chen Hui suggested conservative treatment instead of surgery. One reason was that Wang Kai's mother was older, and the risks of surgery were lower. The second reason was to save money, as Wang Kai's financial capability could withstand the costs. Wang Kai thanked Chen Hui for considering his situation so thoroughly. Wang Kai went to resign to Liu Zhen Wei, stating that he couldn't pursue the associate senior title, and with his mother being sick and having to support two children, he couldn't bear it anymore.
Liu Zhen Wei gave Wang Kai the money that he and Ma Lan had scraped together and reluctantly signed the agreement. Wang Kai asked Liu Zhen Wei to keep Chen Hui in the department. Liu Zhen Wei went to see President Jiang and explained that the department heads had submitted a petition. After much contemplation, President Jiang said he would do his best. Liu Zhen Wei expressed his gratitude to him.
