Episode 17 recap: Nan Yan and Yin Ya Pursue the True Culprit
In Episode 17, Ji Yang engaged in combat with a man in a black robe and discovered that there are others besides himself who can control dark curses. After the man in black left, Meng Zhi Guang recognized Ji Yang as someone who had lived there before, but Ji Yang no longer remembered him or Nan Yan. As Meng Zhi Guang neared death, he told Ji Yang that anyone destined to be under his protection, including himself, could not escape their fate.
Meng Zhi Guang uttered Nan Rao's name as he drew his last breath. When Nan Yan and the others hurried to the Yueye Sect, Ji Yang had already vanished without a trace. The devastated Meng Ying wanted to seek revenge, but Nan Yan calmed her down and urged her to first complete the task Meng Zhi Guang had entrusted to them.
Privately, Nan Yan told Yin Ya that she had detected the presence of a dark curse, suspecting it was related to the Buddhist scriptures. Earlier, after Nan Yan had purified the world, the Ascetic Master had given her four verses as she left seclusion: "The Dharma Realm reappears, all phenomena are destroyed, the four seas converge, the five continents are enlightened."
The Ascetic Master explained that these verses were left behind by the Ancestor Dharma Repentance Master, and only those who had endured nine kalpas could decipher them. As the only person besides the Dharma Repentance Master to have emerged from the Nine Kalpa Tower, Nan Yan was tasked with eliminating evil and restoring the five continents.
Back at the Jiming Palace, Ji Yang inquired about the identity of the man in black from Sengluo. Sengluo was unaware of the details, but emphasized the importance of retrieving the Blood Phoenix Hairpin, which could open the entrance to the Youchan Abyss. Though Ji Yang was unfamiliar with the Blood Phoenix Hairpin and the Youchan Abyss, he suspected the man in black coveted the hairpin to harness the power of dark curses. Determined to avenge Meng Zhi Guang, Ji Yang prepared to head to Nancang.
However, just as Ji Yang was about to leave, Nan Yan and Yin Ya arrived at the Jiming Palace, sensing the presence of a dark curse. At a teahouse, Ji Yang overheard disciples of the Righteous Sect discussing the Blood-Stained Asura, which he dismissed with disdain, angering the others. Nan Yan and Ji Yang rushed to the teahouse and encountered the Righteous Sect disciples being harassed by demonic cultivators, forcing them to reveal their identities as the Blood-Stained Asura.
This drew the attention of Pei Zhao Gang, the leader of the Five Demonic Overlords, who sought to vent his anger on Nan Yan. After a brief skirmish, Nan Yan swiftly defeated Pei Zhao Gang. Sensing the dark curse nearby, Nan Yan decided to rest there for the night and pursue the culprit the next day on the whale boat.
Since Nan Yan's visit to the teahouse, the seat she had occupied was considered a coveted throne, and those wishing to sit there had to make reservations in advance.
Young Master Yuan Feng of Haixiao City heard that the Bloodstained Asura was a beauty without peer, and he couldn't help but develop an interest. He happened to learn that the Asura would also be boarding the whale ship, and he made some plans.
Soon, a giant whale over a thousand feet tall surfaced from the sea, its broad back able to carry over a hundred people, astonishing all present. The Dragon Sect disciples inspected the identities of those boarding the ship one by one, ready to unleash their wrath on any demonic cultivators trying to sneak on board.
Ji Yang didn't bother hiding his demonic aura, but Yin Ya was from a demonic clan, so if his identity was exposed, the consequences would be dire. Nan Yan thus gave Yin Ya the Silver Serpent Pearl to conceal his aura.
Ji Yang then boarded the whale ship under the guise of a Dragon Sect disciple without raising any suspicions. Nan Yan was surprised to find no demonic aura on the ship, but with so many innocent civilians aboard, he couldn't act rashly. He planned to first speak with the captain about cooperating to search for any demonic cultivators.
However, the captain vehemently refused Nan Yan's request, insisting that no demonic cultivators could possibly be on the whale ship. Yin Ya complained incessantly, but Nan Yan noticed the captain was ill-tempered due to a chronic illness, so he planned to try and cure the captain's ailment in hopes of gaining his cooperation.
Meanwhile, Mu Zhan Ting had been ordered by his father Mu Guang Han to stay home and cultivate. Mu Zhan Ting felt he had made progress, but Mu Guang Han refused to let him leave the Dragon Sect. Angered by Mu Zhan Ting's idleness, Mu Guang Han ordered Yuju and Yuque to prepare gifts to offer the Yao Palace, intending to betroth Yunnian to his son.
As Nan Yan procured medicine for the captain, he felt they were being watched, unaware that it was the licentious Yuan Feng. Yin Ya, however, thought it was natural for them to attract attention given Nan Yan's notorious reputation as the Bloodstained Asura.
