Episode 21 recap: The Four Friends of Nanyan Reunite on the Whale Ship
In episode 21, Ji Yang sees the massive whale ship as practically an island, with everything one could need. He wanders about the ship while Nanyan is busy procuring medicinal herbs. Suddenly, Yuan Feng barges in, clearly interested in Nanyan, and makes up an excuse to invite her to dinner.
However, Nanyan sees through Yuan Feng's ploy and ends up drugging him instead, causing a grand public spectacle. To make matters worse, Ji Yang secretly adds fuel to the fire, completely humiliating Yuan Feng. Meanwhile, Nanyan gently helps a young girl catch butterflies, with Ji Yang watching her intently until she leaves.
Furious but still enamored with Nanyan, Yuan Feng plans to use the despicable "Illusion Love Perfume" to win her over, confident that even the most virtuous woman cannot resist its allure. On the other hand, Ji Yang worries about how to expel Sengluo from his body, as the two are now fused and a forceful separation would be disastrous. Sengluo continues to nag in Ji Yang's ear, driving him mad until he pushes the spirit back into submission.
When the captain announces the rare sight of the whale ship's rain, Ji Yang and Nanyan go to watch, instinctively sharing an umbrella. Nanyan has a private matter to discuss with the captain, using her "Withered Grass" remedy to cure his long-standing ailment, earning his deep gratitude and reinforced security.
Concerned about potential trouble, Nanyan wants to check the passenger manifest, and the captain, though reluctant, gives her a token to investigate on her own. Ji Yang secretly follows Nanyan, using a barrier to cloak his presence. As Nanyan examines the list, she senses something amiss and accidentally touches Ji Yang's barrier, their hands meeting. This contact triggers Nanyan's memories of Ji Yang, but he quickly withdraws his hand without responding to her questions.
Nanyan discovers an entry for a "Hidden" disciple of the Yanyue Sect, which she and Yin Ya suspect is an imposter. Yin Ya sneaks into Ji Yang's room to investigate further, narrowly avoiding detection by the Dragon Cave disciples and using an illusion spell to escape.
In the room, Yin Ya finds the porridge suspicious and feigns fainting to lure out the culprit, but is surprised to find Yuan Feng instead. It turns out Ji Yang had already disciplined Yuan Feng, who unexpectedly discovered the Blood Phoenix Hairpin. Under Ji Yang's interrogation, Yuan Feng reveals its origin and begs to be taken in, even offering to help Ji Yang pursue Nanyan - only to be swiftly rejected.
The next day, Yuan Feng again approaches Nanyan, claiming he was under the influence of the Illusion Love Perfume the previous night. Nanyan doesn't believe him, but the invitation from the young master piques her interest, especially since the handwriting resembles Ji Yang's. Curious, Nanyan decides to attend, and to her astonishment, Ji Yang is indeed waiting for her there.
