Episode 29 recap: Nan Yan Meets Her Mother's Old Friends
After the grand assembly, Yun Nian intercepts Mu Zhan Ting, jealous of his time spent with Nan Ya. Mistaking them for lovers, he makes sarcastic remarks and throws barbs. Nan Yan senses his jealousy and quickly explains that she and Mu Zhan Ting are sworn siblings, and she already has someone in her heart. Yun Nian immediately softens his tone.
Just as Yun Nian is about to mention the matter of Nan Fangzhu, he and Nan Yan are summoned to participate in the Mountain and Sea Trial. Mu Zhan Ting initially doesn't want to go, but Nan Yan convinces him to join. Meanwhile, Fu Lang has become a disciple of Dao Sheng Tian, and Meng Ying approaches him, but he remains cold, leaving her feeling disheartened.
Meng Xiao Lou learns that Nan Yan is Nan Rao's daughter and approaches her, inquiring about her reason for coming to Longdu. Nan Yan reveals that she's seeking refuge with Mu Guang Han, who was close to her mother. She also learns that Meng Xiao Lou established his sect based on demon-slaying techniques and boldly asks him to teach her some of his skills.
Meng Xiao Lou, no longer hesitant, shares the secrets of his mountain-opening swordsmanship with Nan Yan. He reveals that he and Nan Rao both studied under the former headmaster of Dao Sheng Tian, and that he learned his swordsmanship from him. He also recounts the past between Mu Guang Han and Nan Rao, confirming their close relationship.
Yun Nian waits for Nan Yan and expresses his desire to see Nan Rao's former residence, curious about the extraordinary woman he admires. Nan Yan becomes emotional when talking about her mother, but learns about Ji Yang's past as a celestial emperor, which makes her uneasy. She recalls her encounters with Ji Yang and realizes that he and her mother were both exiled to the Northern Frontier and had their hearts removed. She suspects that the same person must be responsible for both crimes.
Nan Yan is also confused about Mu Guang Han's deliberate concealment. That evening, she seeks Mu Zhan Ting's help in investigating. Together, they search throughout the night and, guided by the Phoenix Tail Bell, discover a secret room containing a wedding dress embroidered with Nan Rao's name.
Nan Yan and Mu Zhan Ting are puzzled by the mystery surrounding Mu Guang Han and Nan Rao. Just as they are trying to understand, Mu Guang Han enters and severely reprimands Mu Zhan Ting. Mu Zhan Ting, refusing to accept the punishment, suspects that he and Nan Yan might be half-siblings.
Mu Guang Han sighed in resignation, admitting that he and Nan Rao were betrothed by the Demon Empress, but Nan Rao had always refused to marry him. One day, she took the Phoenix Zun's fallen feather and gave it to him, asking him to quickly make the "Vermilion Bird Soaring Sky Skirt" before they could wed. However, when the wedding dress was finally finished, Nan Rao never reappeared. Later, Mu Guang Han learned that Nan Rao had already requested a divorce from the Demon Empress, and the supposed rush to make the wedding dress was a ploy to buy time.
Mu Guang Han didn't know much about the Blood Phoenix Hairpin. Seeing Nan Yan about to leave, he confined her and Mu Zhan Ting to their room. Mu Zhan Ting, experienced with being locked up, had already prepared a secret passage for escape. He told Nan Yan to leave first while he stayed behind to deal with the guards.
After escaping from the Long family, Nan Yan rushed to Meng Xiao Lou and revealed that her mother had been murdered. Meng Xiao Lou's face turned pale, and he vowed to help Nan Yan find the truth and comfort Nan Rao's spirit. From Meng Xiao Lou's words, Nan Yan guessed that the Mountain and Sea Trial might be the key to unlocking the mystery.
Later, Nan Yan found herself surrounded by searchers in the street and had to hide. Ji Yang, angered by the way Nan Yan was being treated, personally beat up the searchers. Nan Yan then confronted Ji Yang, accusing him of avoiding her. In a fit of anger, she attacked him, but Ji Yang didn't even flinch.
Nan Yan, unable to bear the sight of his indifference, withdrew her attack. She was furious at his unilateral actions and completely disappointed, choosing to leave him for good. As soon as Nan Yan left, Yin Ya appeared and urged Ji Yang to talk to Nan Yan and stop hurting her. That night, Ji Yang drowned his sorrows in alcohol, while Nan Yan also sought solace in drink. They were separated, yet their thoughts remained with each other.
Mu Guang Han, enraged by Nan Yan's disappearance, took his anger out on Mu Zhan Ting. As he was scolding his son, Yun Nian rushed in to defend Mu Zhan Ting and took him to see Nan Yan. To their surprise, Nan Yan had decided to participate in the Mountain and Sea Trial to find the Reverse Evolution Marrow Mirror.
