Episode 9 recap: Nan Yan and Ji Yang's Budding Romance

In Episode 9, Mu Zhan Ting accidentally ingested poisonous mushrooms. Seeing the situation was dire, Yin Ya quickly escorted him back to his room to rest. Meanwhile, Ji Yang noticed Nan Yan had fallen asleep, so he carefully carried her to her bed and made sure she was comfortable before going to confront Yin Ya.

It turns out Ji Yang had already realized there was something suspicious about the hot pot, and he had intentionally pretended to faint just to eavesdrop on Yin Ya and Nan Yan's conversation. He mocked Yin Ya, saying his dream of obtaining the Qifeng Summoning Manual was nothing but a pipe dream.

Yin Ya refused to back down, retorting that the Xiu Gu was full of dangers, and whether he could get the manual depended on fate. Plus, Nan Yan had already promised to lend him the Silver Bladefish Pearl. Ji Yang didn't want to hear any more of Yin Ya's boasting and simply warned him to behave himself at the Yanyue Sect.

The next day, a furious Mu Zhan Ting confronted Yin Ya, accusing him of knowingly feeding him the poisonous mushrooms. Realizing he couldn't hide the truth, Yin Ya had to negotiate a reconciliation with Mu Zhan Ting. Mu Zhan Ting said he'd forgive Yin Ya on one condition.

Concerned about the uncontrolled spiritual power within Nan Yan, Ji Yang decided to teach her cultivation techniques to help her improve. Nan Yan was thrilled and insisted on training with Ji Yang. However, her foundations were too weak, so she struggled. She even asked Ji Yang if there were any shortcuts, and he mentioned three options: passing down cultivation, reverse cultivation, and dual cultivation. Nan Yan playfully teased Ji Yang about trying dual cultivation, which flustered him and made him abruptly leave.

Under Ji Yang's strict guidance, Nan Yan's cultivation advanced rapidly, and she soon formed her core. She boasted about her extraordinary talents, but Ji Yang reminded her not to be arrogant and to stay low-key.

To celebrate her progress, Nan Yan dragged Ji Yang down the mountain to go shopping. They were even mistaken for a married couple, much to Nan Yan's delight. She bought many medicinal herbs to take back to the Xiu Gu. Nan Yan also showed great interest in the puppet show, performing a segment that made Ji Yang burst out laughing. However, Ji Yang realized he was starting to develop feelings for Nan Yan and quickly made an excuse to return to the mountain.

As for Mu Zhan Ting, he came up with a plan to punish Yin Ya by making him the poetry society's mascot to attract new members. Yin Ya had no choice but to agree, and it did draw in quite a few people, who proceeded to harass Yin Ya. Mu Zhan Ting was delighted, saying this was his way of letting Yin Ya experience his own pain. He also revealed that he never actually intended to recruit new members - he just wanted to humiliate Yin Ya, and so the mushroom poisoning incident was now settled.

That night, Nan Yan went to talk to her mother, mentioning Ji Yang. Her mother picked up on the subtle relationship between them and teased Nan Yan, who then realized her mother had already seen through their feelings. With her mother's guidance, Nan Yan recognized that she had indeed fallen for Ji Yang and shyly responded to her mother's questions.

When Nan Yan returned to her room, she found Ji Yang had laid out a bedding for himself on the floor, as the bed was too hard. Feeling the warmth, she realized Ji Yang had been keeping her bed warm before she came back. Nan Yan was touched and quietly covered him with the blanket, even warming his reddened ears.

Meanwhile, Zhu Sui was furious that he couldn't find Ji Yang and blamed his incompetent subordinates. Suddenly, a dart and a note arrived, claiming that Lord Shao Cheng was at the Yanyue Sect. Although unsure of its veracity, Zhu Sui decided to take his men and investigate.
