Episode 3 recap: Stepfather peeping at Cheng Yu Shan.
Let's go back to 2006 when Cheng Yu Shan's mother, after her husband's death, was supposed to remarry. She lost her household registration in the town and took her young daughter with her. However, she remained immersed in the happiness of having a husband and didn't have time for her daughter. As a result, Cheng Yu Shan grew up in a very poor living environment, which is why she wanted to leave home as soon as possible.
Unbeknownst to Cheng Yu Shan, her stepfather had already installed cameras in the house, monitoring her every move. Cheng Yu Shan's room was like a storage room, and her mother never cared about the quality of her life as long as she had enough to eat.
Li Ran and his grandmother temporarily stayed at Shen Yao's house. One morning, Li Ran was looking for a restroom and accidentally barged in, only to find Shen Yao just finished showering. Shen Yao coldly told Li Ran that it would be best to knock in the future when entering her house.
While searching for something, Cheng Yu Shan accidentally dropped a picture frame on the ground, shattering it. To her surprise, she discovered a hidden camera inside the frame. Cheng Yu Shan was terrified to realize that her life had been violated and spied upon, and she had no idea how long it had been going on.
Frantically, Cheng Yu Shan searched the entire house for other cameras, feeling that there was no safe place. She wanted to confront her stepfather but changed her mind when she reached the doorstep. When the water pipes in the house broke, it was her mother who fixed them and hardly even wanted to give them a penny.
Early in the morning, Li Ran's grandmother prepared breakfast for everyone, including the Shen family. Shen Yao had a younger brother, and their mother had no time to take care of them. Upon learning that Shen Yao and Li Ran attended the same school, Cheng Yu Shan's mother suggested they go to school together in the morning. Li Ran had to leave his unfinished meal and catch the bus.
On the other hand, while having breakfast, Cheng Yu Shan desperately wanted to ask about the cameras but couldn't bring herself to say anything. Her mother's focus was always on her younger brother. Anything Li Ran didn't eat, Shenzhen could directly give to Cheng Yu Shan. At first, Cheng Yu Shan wanted them to contribute money for school uniforms, but they thought 380 yuan was too expensive. Cheng Yu Shan even had an argument with her mother. She directly confronted her stepfather with the shattered wedding photo and almost revealed the camera, but he suddenly mentioned that it was Cheng Yu Shan's mother's birthday today, so she swallowed her words.
In Shen Yao's house, Li Ran also felt very trapped. Even if his grandmother had foot injuries, she endured the pain and continued working. Shen Yao's mother didn't provide them with a guest room but made them stay in a tent in the grocery store. Li Ran voluntarily offered candy to Shen Yao in the car, but Shen Yao didn't accept it.
When Lei Ming goes to work, he needs someone to sign the class roster. That person is Xiao Rui, so Lei Ming goes to find Xiao Rui. Xiao Rui is sleeping in the office, so Lei Ming wakes him up. Xiao Rui doesn't actually oppose Lei Ming's work, but the current leadership doesn't support it, so he can't do anything about it.
In fact, Lei Ming and Xiao Rui used to be colleagues. In the end, they started competing in planking exercises, and Xiao Rui agreed to sign the roster if they could enroll enough students. During Cheng Yu Shan's physical education class, she was maliciously targeted by her classmates, who stuck chewing gum in her hair. Cheng Yu Shan didn't resist.
Sang Xia asked students to help move desks and chairs to an art studio, which would be their classroom from now on. Class has already started, and both Li Ran and Cheng Yu Shan have something on their minds because they don't have the money to buy school uniforms. They were scolded by the teacher, and Cheng Yu Shan got angry and stormed out of the classroom.
Sang Xia found Cheng Yu Shan alone and lost in thought on the rooftop. Meanwhile, Lei Ming was planting trees in a corner of the campus, fulfilling the wish he made at the opening ceremony. While Li Ran was getting his phone repaired at the school gate, he saw Cheng Yu Shan and asked her if she wanted to join Lei Ming's class, but Cheng Yu Shan didn't answer.
Cheng Yu Shan returned home very late, and her family didn't even wait for her to have dinner. Although it was her mother's birthday, her stepfather was eating voraciously while her mother worked in the kitchen. Cheng Yu Shan felt uneasy about this. Cheng Yu Shan still gave her mother the brooch she bought for her. Her stepfather called Cheng Yu Shan outside and asked her to accompany his friends for a drink. Her mother wanted to stop them, but Cheng Yu Shan, in a fit of anger, ended up drinking all the alcohol.
At night, her stepfather even copied the photos he secretly took of Cheng Yu Shan onto a disc. When he opened the camera again, he was surprised to see himself.
