Episode 29 recap: Rebellions have started in various places.
Li Da Zhao waited in the prison cell for someone to tell him that his time had come. He slowly stood up with heavy footsteps and started walking out. Chen Du Xiu found Wang Jing Wei and told him that the rebel army was less than fifty meters away from Wuhan. Wang Jing Wei told him that distant water cannot put out a nearby fire. Chen Du Xiu told him that the Communist Party also had soldiers.
Mao Ze Dong ordered all Communist Party members to pick up their guns and defend Wuhan. Mao Ze Dong asked Chen Du Xiu if they didn't have the right to speak. Chen Du Xiu told him that everyone had the right to speak, so he asked them to speak up. Mao Ze Dong told everyone that he was the Secretary of the Central Agricultural Committee, so he would address the issues of the farmers.
He knew that the farmers had been oppressed in the past, and the vast majority of the people had no rights. Now that the revolution was in crisis, he believed that the issue of the farmers was of utmost importance for future work. Chen Du Xiu, however, disagreed. He believed that national cooperation should be the priority, considering the overall situation in the future. Mao Ze Dong asked him if the blood of the Shanghai workers on April 12 had not awakened him yet. He should ask for the opinions of those present and the views of the farmers.
Li Da Zhao was called out in the prison cell, knowing that today was the second day of their party's Fifth Congress. Mao Ze Dong asked Cai He Sen how the slogans of the Fifth Congress were changed. Cai He Sen told him that it should be Wang Jing Wei, Tan Yan Kaitai, and Qu Qiu Bai who were coming over. Qu Qiu Bai also walked over and told them that he had changed into a Zhongshan suit. What kind of meeting was this?
Wang Jing Wei made a speech on behalf of the representatives. He knew that there had been many voices since the establishment of national cooperation. He emphasized once again that national cooperation was extremely important, and he would definitely punish Jiang Jie Shi for his anti-party actions. Mao Ze Dong stood up and asked Wang Jing Wei about his views on land distribution. Wang Jing Wei told him that land reform was necessary, but the timing was not ripe yet.
Wei Gong told him that the most important issue now was the issue of revolution, not land. If there was no revolution, what was there to discuss about land distribution? While there was a heated argument about land issues at the meeting, someone shouted to Chen Du Xiu and Li Da Zhao that they had sacrificed themselves. Mao Ze Dong stood still, and in his mind, he saw a snowy scene with Chen Du Xiu and Li Da Zhao sitting in a carriage, rushing towards him. He got on the carriage with the two of them.
The three of them passionately recited stirring poems in the carriage, but suddenly, Mao Ze Dong turned his head and found himself alone in the snowy field.
Mao Ze Dong read the letter written by Li Da Zhao, in which Li Da Zhao told him that if sacrifice could achieve noble actions, they would all do so without hesitation. Mao Ze Dong finished reading the letter with tears in his eyes.
Chen Du Xiu sat alone in the courtyard, drinking alone as if talking to himself or talking to Li Da Zhao. Chen Du Xiu came to tell Wang Jing Wei that if they lost Wuhan, it wouldn't only be the Communist Party that would be harmed.
Wang Jing Wei told him that he understood the principle of "when lips are gone, the teeth will be cold," but distant water cannot quench a nearby thirst. Their army was in other places. Chen Du Xiu asked him how many troops they had now. Wang Jing Wei told him they had only over three thousand people, but the rebels had millions of people.
After thinking for a while, Chen Du Xiu told him that they still had soldiers to defend Wuhan. Mao Ze Dong began to inspire the students of his military academy to defend Wuhan. Xia Dou Yin had already joined Jiang Jie Shi and was attacking Wuhan. Mao Ze Dong encouraged them to shout slogans to overthrow Xia Dou Yin and defend Wuhan.
Cai He Sen asked Mao Ze Dong if Wang Jing Wei had promised to send them reinforcements. Mao Ze Dong told him that Wang Jing Wei was just stalling them and had no real intention of providing them with reinforcements. As they were speaking, someone came to tell Mao Ze Dong that Xu Ke Xiang in Changsha had also started to betray them. He had killed many Communists and seized a lot of ammunition.
Jiang Jie Shi ordered someone to introduce French paulownia trees. He wanted the French paulownia trees to be full in Nanjing because Song Mei Ling liked them. His subordinate came to tell him that Xu Ke Xiang was taking action in Changsha, but Jiang Jie Shi didn't care. He only asked his subordinate to find out what else Song Mei Ling liked besides French paulownia trees.
Qu Qiu Bai told Chen Du Xiu that their people were all sacrificing themselves, and if they retreated further, more would die. Mao Ze Dong also told him that as long as they were killing Communist Party members, Wang Jing Wei would not stop them. While they were talking, Zhou En Lai arrived. Chen Du Xiu asked him how they should handle things and whether they should still continue the overall cooperation between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party. He asked Zhou En Lai to give them some advice.
Zhou En Lai said that he had been captured twice by Jiang Jie Shi. If it weren't for being Mao Ze Dong's student, he would have sacrificed himself long ago. Chen Du Xiu told him that Wang Jing Wei wouldn't be like Jiang Jie Shi. Zhou En Lai would then ask if it was wise to put the fate and lives of the entire party on one person. Didn't he think it was risky?
