Episode 4 recap: Two people, Huang Ai and Pang Renquan, were killed.
He Shu Heng informed Mao Zedong that Huang Ai and Pang Renquan had encountered trouble. The governor of Hunan, Zhao Hengti, without any interrogation or evidence, subjected both of them to brutal execution within two hours. Before their execution, they shouted sacrificial slogans and proclaimed their success. Zhao Hengti plastered the streets with notices defaming Huang Ai and Pang Renquan.
Zhou Enai, Sun Zhongshan, and others learned about the sacrifice of the two individuals and spoke out in support of Huang and Pang. They were the first to demonstrate the value of the working class in their lives. Mao Zedong held three memorial services for the two individuals. Fearing a public outcry, Zhao Hengti prohibited the publication of this event in newspapers. As a result, Mao Zedong decided to hold the memorial service in Shanghai.
Chen Duxiu was furious and believed that the memorial service should not only be held in Shanghai but also extended to the entire world to expose Zhao Hengti's crimes. Mao Zedong proclaimed that in present-day China, there is both happiness in life and grief in death. The sacrifices being mourned are not only those of Huang Ai and Pang Renquan but also every individual present. Their deaths were not just a significant event in Hunan but in the entire country.
Following this, representatives from various regions held memorial services, echoing the spirit of Huang and Pang and shouting, "The spirit of Huang and Pang will never die." In order to calm the situation, Zhao Hengti instructed his subordinates to provide compensation to the families of Huang and Pang. One month later, Mao Zedong's mother-in-law learned that he loved eating fish, so she specially prepared Xiangtan fish for him.
Mao Zedong hurriedly asked Yang Kaihui to taste it as well, but to his surprise, she vomited at the smell of fish. She asked Mao Zedong to accompany her for a walk and told him that she was going to be a mother. Mao Zedong was extremely excited and lifted Yang Kaihui up, spinning her around. Yang Kaihui cautioned him to be careful.
As the two of them were joyfully celebrating, Yang Kaihui burst into tears and expressed her fear to Mao Zedong. She was afraid of losing him. From the moment she first saw Mao Zedong, she knew he was not an ordinary man. She had read many of his writings and heard about his many accomplishments, and she had fallen in love with him.
Yang Kaihui felt incredibly at ease after being with Mao Zedong. Their destinies had intertwined since they got together. If there ever came a day when Mao Zedong was arrested, she would follow him without hesitation. However, now that she was expecting a child, she started to worry. She was afraid that Mao Zedong wouldn't be able to witness the birth of their child. Mao Zedong reassured her that everything would be fine. He wanted to see their child grow up and witness Yang Kaihui's hair turn white with age. Mao Zedong went mountain climbing with Mr. He. He asked Mr. He if there was something going on at home since he hadn't seen him at school lately.
Mao Zedong believed that their school was recently established and couldn't function without He Min Fan. He Min Fan admitted that although he had joined the Communist Party, he was already past middle age. He couldn't be like Huang Ai or Pang Renquan. He valued his own life and suggested that Mao Zedong find another suitable candidate for the position of school principal. Mao Zedong acknowledged that he had not considered this aspect before and expressed his deep gratitude to He Min Fan for his assistance at Zixiu University. In 1922, He Min Fan left the party. Chen Jiongming launched a rebellion, and Sun Yat-sen hastily sought refuge on the Yongfeng warship.
To prevent Sun Yat-sen from feeling disheartened, Jiang Jieshi quickly went to Guangzhou. His newlywed wife was worried and didn't want him to go, but he insisted that he would regret it for the rest of his life if he didn't. Chen Duxiu and Li Dazhao discussed the idea of joining the Kuomintang (Nationalist Party). Chen Duxiu informed Li Dazhao that he was preparing to find an assistant for Mao Zedong.
Yang Kaihui's pregnancy was becoming evident, and she was sweeping the yard with a broom. When He Baozhen saw her, she quickly told her to sit down and not to work. Liu Shaoqi pretended to be a repairman and came to see Mao Zedong. He Baozhen opened the door for him and mistook him for Yang Kaihui. Liu Shaoqi brought the meeting materials to Mao Zedong, who attentively read the book in his hands. He Baozhen secretly observed Liu Shaoqi at the door, and Yang Kaihui noticed her admiration for Liu Shaoqi.
