Episode 7 recap: The Kuomintang and the Communist Party of China have begun to cooperate.
A major event occurred shortly after the establishment of the Workers' and Peasants' Association, dealing a heavy blow to Mao Zedong and his associates. People gathered at the entrance of Sun Yat-sen's residence to protest against the cooperation between the two parties, shouting that the Premier must think twice. Sun Yat-sen told them that if they insisted on opposing, they could leave the party, and everyone fell silent upon hearing his words.
Li Da became the new president of the Self-Study University, and Mao Zedong brought him to his residence. Li Da felt that it was a much better place than Shanghai. Mao Zedong asked him what had happened between him and Chen Duxiu. Li Da explained to Mao Zedong that it was because he had joined the Kuomintang as an individual.
Mao Zedong briefed Li Da on the current situation, and Li Da understood that Mao Zedong was implying that Wu Peifu might launch an offensive. In that year, the shocking worker strike began, which caused a sensation both domestically and internationally. Wu Peifu ordered his subordinates to suppress the workers. Countless workers died in this struggle, which became known as the "July 7 Massacre."
The major strike on the Beijing-Hankou Railway failed, and the grand workers' movement in China entered a low ebb. Chen Duxiu instructed Guo Tao to handle the affairs of the sacrificed workers properly, as he wanted people to know that there were people behind them. Chen Duxiu realized that this tragedy had dealt them a heavy blow. Previously, they had underestimated the ferocity of their enemies and overestimated their own strength.
Their current power was far from sufficient, and faced with a formidable opponent, their struggle was like fighting empty-handed. Chen Duxiu heard the rumbling of thunder outside and knew that in order to succeed, they must harness the power of the thunder. This thunder was to sow the seeds of anti-imperialism and anti-feudalism in the hearts of the people nationwide, only then would they succeed.
Mao Zedong told Li Da that there was no ready-made path to the success of the Chinese revolution, and they needed to constantly explore and move forward on their own. Mao Zedong happily played with his son Mao Anying, telling him that he was going to Shanghai and asking him not to miss him too much.
Mao Zedong's mother-in-law called him out and asked him how long he would be gone this time. Mao Zedong told her it would probably be three months. He was concerned about Yang Kaihui because Mao Anying was still young, and Yang Kaihui was pregnant with another child. His mother-in-law assured him that she would take care of everything at home, so he could go without worries.
Mao Zedong left Changsha and headed to Shanghai via Guangzhou, coincidentally attending the Third Party Congress.
Xiang Jingyu and Cai Hesen went to the train station together to pick up Mao Zedong. Xiang Jingyu asked why Yang Kaihui didn't come and expressed her regret that someone as capable as Yang Kaihui was wasted at home.
Mao Zedong told her that once Kaihui gave birth to their second child, he would let her come to Guangzhou and work together with Xiang Jingyu in women's work. Sun Yat-sen told Ma Lin that he strongly agreed with the cooperation between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party. He wanted to promote the cooperation between the two parties as soon as possible. Sun Yat-sen asked for the opinions of Chen Duxiu and Li Dazhao, and both of them agreed to the proposal but expressed their concerns. Sun Yat-sen assured them that he would take their concerns into consideration.
While the group was having a meeting, Lin Sen and a few others were shouting downstairs in disagreement. Sun Yat-sen had to stop the meeting and let them come in. Before they could speak, Sun Yat-sen asked Sun Ke, the mayor of Guangzhou and his eldest son, if he was doing a good job as the mayor.
Sun Yat-sen suspected that he was forming factions and planning a rebellion within his own family. He said that if anyone wanted to obstruct the Three Principles of the People, Sun Ke was one of them. Sun Ke was shocked by Sun Yat-sen's anger and quickly promised to reconsider.
Sun Yat-sen posed a question to the group: If there were people like Chen Jiongming who betrayed them, how could they retreat? Sun Yat-sen believed that they needed their own army, but Lin Sen suggested that they could directly cooperate with the Soviet Union.
Sun Yat-sen told them that it was not only that, but they also needed to find a way to save China from the depths of crisis. He told them that if they insisted on opposing, they could leave the party. Chen Duxiu, Qiu Baixi, and Li Dazhao were having skewers together when Chen Duxiu suddenly learned that Mao Zedong had arrived. He hurriedly took Qiu Baixi to find Mao Zedong.
Chen Duxiu invited Mao Zedong to work in the central leadership, which caught Mao Zedong by surprise. Mao Zedong and Qiu Baixi both strongly supported the cooperation between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party, but Guo Tao disagreed. In the face of the controversy, Li Dazhao spoke up. He first explained that he had joined the Nationalist Party as an individual, and after listening to his speech, everyone agreed.
