Episode 1 recap: Fan Wu Jiu discovered something suspicious about Wang Hai's death.
During the early years of the Republic of China, people were struggling to make a living. In a peaceful village, however, villagers started dying under mysterious circumstances. Wang Hai's body was found in the courtyard, and his grieving wife was crying over him. At that moment, a man walked in and explained the situation to the village chief, suspecting that someone had secretly gone to the Enchanting Forest to fish. Wang Hai's wife blamed herself, stating that if she hadn't been sick and unable to afford medical treatment, she wouldn't have had to go to the Enchanting Forest as a last resort. Meanwhile, Fan Wu Jiu examined Wang Hai's body and noticed something unusual—his nasal cavity was remarkably clean, indicating that he did not die from drowning, and the protective formation was intact.
Fan Wu Jiu remembered the rhythm of the stormy night when Wang Hai met his fate. Holding a lantern, Fan Wu Jiu patrolled the streets and encountered an old lady burning paper by the roadside, muttering for the demons to leave quickly. She warned Fan Wu Jiu about the chaos caused by restless spirits during the Ghost Month and advised him not to go near the river if it wasn't necessary.
Before leaving, Fan Wu Jiu had already paid respect to his deceased parents, believing that they would protect him from heaven. As he reached the bridge, he encountered Hai Ge and reminded him of the terrible weather and the risk of fishing in such conditions. However, Hai Ge was determined to catch fish before the heavy rain, as he believed there would be plenty of fish and he wanted to earn some money. He wasn't afraid of the spirits there, as he believed the protective formation in the village would keep him safe. Fan Wu Jiu watched Hai Ge walk away and faintly noticed that he had no shadow, dismissing it as a trick of the eye. Unbeknownst to Fan Wu Jiu, Hai Ge's mind was clouded while fishing in the Enchanting Forest.
