Episode 4 recap: Zhao Jing Jing challenged Jiang Jie to a knife fight.
After Li Nai finished tasting Chef Zhong's signature dish, Jiang Jie asked her who cooked the braised abalone with pork belly better, Chef Zhong or Zhao Jing Jing. Li Nai felt that both of them cooked it authentically, but if she had to choose, Chef Zhong's version was tastier. Jiang Jie told her to remember this taste.
When Li Nai returned home, she smelled a strong odor coming from her father, Li Ji Dong, and reminded him to take a bath. Seeing that Li Ji Dong was unwilling to do so, she had to call Cui Can for help. Li Ji Dong suffered from Alzheimer's disease, not only neglecting personal hygiene but also frequently getting lost. While Li Nai was at work, she had to send him to a nursing home.
Cui Can came to Li Nai's house with bathing tools, and only then did Li Ji Dong obediently enter the bathroom. After washing Li Ji Dong, while Cui Can and Li Nai were chatting, they talked about Chef Zhong. Cui Can told Li Nai that Chef Zhong's name was Zhong Haiyang, and Zhao Jing Jing, the current head chef at Zhao Ye Qing, was his daughter. After Zhao Jing Jing returned from abroad, there was a knife fight between father and daughter to determine who would become the head chef at Zhao Ye Qing. Zhong Haiyang intentionally lost to Zhao Jing Jing, as he wanted to avoid Jiang Jie.
During a meeting of the Chefs Association, Jiang Jie happened to meet Zhao Jing Jing. Director Jin of the Chefs Association specifically requested to taste Zhao Jing Jing's cooking. Zhao Jing Jing made a mapo tofu dish for them, but Director Jin found it too simple and asked her to make two more dishes. Reluctantly, Zhao Jing Jing went into the kitchen and deliberately used two inappropriate ingredients to make the dishes. After finishing, she left.
Jiang Jie looked at the two dishes and came out to remind her that if they were eaten together, it would cause gastrointestinal discomfort. Offending Director Jin would not be beneficial for their five-star rating. Jiang Jie also told Zhao Jing Jing something: not to think she was so great because in the previous competition, Old Zhong intentionally lost to her.
After hearing Jiang Jie's words, Zhao Jing Jing went to find her father. Seeing her daughter visiting him, Old Zhong was very happy and, as per her request, cooked braised abalone with pork belly for her. After tasting her father's cooking, Zhao Jing Jing realized that her father's cooking was indeed better than her own.
So she questioned her father, asking if what Jiang Jie said was true, that he was intentionally avoiding Jiang Jie, and asked what Jiang Jie's father had done that was so wrong.
Upon hearing her daughter's questioning, Chef Zhong recalled the incident from years ago when he voted against Jiang Jie's father during a one-star evaluation. At that time, he simply didn't want Jiang Jie's father to open a restaurant.
When Li Nai went to work, she encountered Zheng Fang Xing, the sous chef at Chun Cheng Restaurant. Seeing Li Nai arriving for work, Zheng Fang Xing was surprised and asked if she hadn't received the message. Li Nai checked her phone and learned that Chun Cheng Restaurant would be closed for three days.
Zhao Jing Jing challenged Jiang Jie to a knife fight, and in preparation for the competition, Li Nai wanted to know the reason behind Zhao Jing Jing's challenge. However, Zheng Fang Xing shook his head and said he didn't understand why the planned five-star evaluation suddenly turned into a knife fight.
Li Nai discovered that Jiang Jie always closed his restaurant for a few days before each competition to stay at home and study dishes. She felt this was a learning opportunity. Jiang Jie went to buy abalone but was refused by the seller. Li Nai went to find Jiang Jie and discovered he wasn't at home, so she called him. Jiang Jie ended up giving her the password to his electronic door at home.
After entering Jiang Jie's home, Li Nai unexpectedly discovered the negative reviews of her restaurant on Jiang Jie's computer, and it turned out that Jiang Jie was behind it all. When Jiang Jie returned, she questioned him about why he did such things, but Jiang Jie said it was for her own good.
Li Nai learned about Jiang Jie's difficulties in buying abalone and volunteered to help her purchase it. While Li Nai went to buy the abalone, Jiang Jie listened to the weather forecast and heard that there was heavy rain outside. Worried about Li Nai, he accidentally cut his hand.
Chen Duo also found out about the locals refusing to sell abalone to Jiang Jie. He bought the abalone from a different location, but when he called Jiang Jie, Jiang Jie said it wasn't needed. After Li Nai bought the abalone, she accompanied Jiang Jie in practicing cooking. Li Nai helped with smelling the ingredients and was responsible for tasting. It was only when she told Jiang Jie that the taste had surpassed Zhao Jing Jing's that he stood up, rubbing his waist, but then fell down exhausted.
Through her observation of Jiang Jie, Li Nai finally uncovered Jiang Jie's secret. Jiang Jie made his dishes so perfect because he repeatedly experimented with them.
