Episode 27 recap: A Mai learned the truth about what happened back then.
Prime Minister Lin asked Lin Ze Rou about her opinion on Shang Yi Zhi as a husband. Lin Ze Rou felt that although Shang Yi Zhi was good, their marriage would result in them being apart for long periods of time due to his military duties. The eldest princess told Shang Yi Zhi that she would intercede on his behalf to marry Prime Minister Lin's daughter, Lin Ze Rou. However, Shang Yi Zhi told her that he disagreed and that his heart belonged only to A Mai.
Yu'er came to visit the Emperor and became very worried when she saw him sick. Yu'er held the Emperor's hand and asked him what was wrong, but the Emperor kept saying that he was fine. Prime Minister Lin asked Lin Ze Rou to look at the letter in his hand and asked if she was anxious to get married. Lin Ze Rou became a little shy and said that she wasn't in a hurry to get married.
Prime Minister Lin's wife was somewhat concerned. While she believed that Shang Yi Zhi was a good choice as a husband, she worried about the long separations caused by his constant presence on the battlefield. She worried for Lin Ze Rou. Shenghua looked at Shang Yi Zhi painting and asked him what he was doing. Shang Yi Zhi told her that it was a red wedding dress he was preparing for A Mai. Shenghua told him that she had swapped their characters (referring to their birth dates) with Lin Ze Rou today. Shang Yi Zhi didn't understand why Shenghua did that, so she told him that she had officially asked Prime Minister Lin for Lin Ze Rou's hand in marriage on his behalf.
She informed Shang Yi Zhi that Prime Minister Lin was very pleased with him. Shang Yi Zhi told his mother that his heart belonged only to A Mai and that he wouldn't marry anyone else. Shenghua told him that A Mai and their marquisate had a deep vendetta, and she asked Shang Yi Zhi to think carefully about it. Shang Yi Zhi didn't know what to do, while Shenghua was plotting something behind the scenes.
A Mai was searching for the whereabouts of Xuanwu Army. As she passed by a few beggars, she happened to overhear them discussing the person she was looking for. A Mai squatted down and gave them some money, and in return, she learned that the person she was looking for lived in Zhaojia Village.
A Mai arrived at Zhaojia Village with a sword in hand. She found Liu Qi, Fang Daniu, and Qi Sanhai. The three of them claimed not to know A Mai, so she showed them the information she had on them and asked if they wanted their wives and children to be brought over. Seeing this, the three of them quickly kneeled down and told A Mai that they also followed Lord Hou's orders, and Lord Hou told them to exterminate everyone.
Upon hearing this, A Mai immediately shed tears and asked Liu Qi which Lord Hou he was referring to. Liu Qi told her it was Lord Hou Shang Wei of Dingnan.
After learning the news, A Mai felt extremely heavy-hearted and returned to Dingnan Mansion in a daze. When Shang Yi Zhi saw A Mai coming back, he was overjoyed and showed her the red wedding dress he had prepared for her.
A Mai looked at the red wedding dress before her and felt a deep sense of irony. Shang Yi Zhi asked A Mai to marry him. A Mai remained silent, and Shang Yi Zhi asked her what was wrong. A Mai told him that she had found Liu Qi today and learned that Liu Qi had never set up a stall in the market.
A Mai knew that someone must have hindered her, and she asked Shang Yi Zhi if it was him. Shang Yi Zhi asked her to let him explain, saying that he did it out of fear of losing her. A Mai angrily asked him to leave. Shang Yi Zhi asked if it was Princess Shenghua who let A Mai know about all this. Shenghua told him that A Mai would have found out eventually; it was just a matter of time.
Shenghua believed that Shang Wei, the marquis, was A Mai's father's murderer, and she was doing all this to protect Shang Yi Zhi. If they got married, the knife held in A Mai's hand could stab him at any time. Shang Yi Zhi didn't believe any of it. He thought that based on his understanding of his father, his father couldn't have been responsible for indiscriminate killings.
Shang Yi Zhi demanded Shenghua to tell him the truth. Shenghua angrily asked if he was going to assassinate the Emperor if she told him the truth. Upon hearing this, Shang Yi Zhi realized that the Emperor was behind all of this. Meanwhile, the Crown Princess burned paper offerings for the Crown Prince and regretted not informing the Emperor earlier, wondering if the Crown Prince would still be alive.
Just as the Emperor's trusted eunuch walked out of the door, he heard hurried reports that the Crown Princess had passed away. After learning about this news, Prime Minister Lin's wife thought that since the Crown Prince was gone and the Crown Princess had followed, and Shang Yi Zhi had a close relationship with the Crown Prince, she worried if Lin Ze Rou would be implicated.
Prime Minister Lin assured her not to worry and said he was going to the palace first. Shang Yi Zhi found A Mai and told her the truth about the situation. It turned out that all of this was orchestrated by Emperor Qi Jing. Shang Yi Zhi's current parents were not his biological parents, and his real parents were also killed by Qi Jing.
