Episode 3 recap: A Mai saved Shang Yi Zhi.
A Mai secretly sneaked out and found the person tied up in the courtyard. He dismissed everything she said as nonsense. When one of Zhang's subordinates wanted to go outside for a moment, he happened to see A Mai trying to release the person. Zhang accused A Mai of having ulterior motives and when she tried to explain, he silenced her and told her to stay put.
Just as they were talking, Shang Yi Zhi and his group arrived. A Mai spotted Shang Yi Zhi and quickly made a sound to get his attention. Shang Yi Zhi's guard, Mu Bai, reminded him not to complicate matters and not to meddle in other people's affairs. However, Shang Yi Zhi ignored the advice and shouted, "Who did this?"
Zhang heard him and approached, admitting that he was the one responsible. Shang Yi Zhi demanded that he release the captive. Zhang disagreed, questioning if people from the Ding Wang Mansion were so important. Shang Yi Zhi then revealed the seal of the Ding Wang Mansion to prove his authority. After seeing the seal, Zhang agreed to release only one person and chose to free A Mai.
Shang Yi Zhi asked A Mai where she would be staying that night. A Mai replied that she would squeeze in with two shop assistants. Because Shang Yi Zhi knew about her female identity, she blurted out concerns about what the two men might do to her. Realizing his mistake, he told A Mai that she should just stay with him. Mu Bai advised him not to worry about A Mai.
Mu Bai asked Shang Yi Zhi the reason for their disguise this time, as it was meant to deceive others. Now, he had exposed their identities for the sake of an unknown person. However, Shang Yi Zhi believed that A Mai was different. She had saved his life before, and besides, she was not a stranger.
Shang Yi Zhi told Mu Bai to go and rest, but Mu Bai insisted on staying to ensure his safety. Shang Yi Zhi decided to go out for a while and have a chat with A Mai. He informed her that he was going to take up a position in Qingzhou and asked where A Mai intended to go.
A Mai told him that she was going to Silver Fortress City, as Chun Nong had informed her that she could find the information she sought there. Shang Yi Zhi mentioned that Chun Nong had left, and so had his father.
Although A Mai felt a bit sad, she still comforted Shang Yi Zhi and advised him to grieve. Shang Yi Zhi told her that he actually felt quite uncomfortable inside, but he couldn't show it because of his mother's presence. A Mai encouraged him to cry if he felt like it and not to hold it in. She said she wanted to go out for some fresh air and as she stood at the door, she heard Shang Yi Zhi crying from behind. A Mai couldn't help but shed tears herself, thinking about the scene she witnessed when her own parents were killed. The next day, as A Mai was about to leave, she happened to see a group of people impersonating members of the Ministry of Justice. She noticed that they were heading towards the post station and guessed that they might be planning to assassinate Shang Yi Zhi.
A Mai touched the post station token at her waist and had a sudden inspiration, so she returned to the post station. She showed the token to the station's owner and told him that she was actually a secret agent from the Ministry of Justice. She informed him that there were people impersonating their ministry's personnel and hoped that he could be vigilant. Just as she finished speaking, A Mai heard some movement from Shang Yi Zhi, so she quickly ran over to tell him about the situation.
As soon as A Mai finished telling Shang Yi Zhi about the situation, they saw a group of people, disguised as members of the Ministry of Justice, approaching. The owner of the post station discreetly approached A Mai to ask for guidance on what to do. A Mai told him that she was conducting a covert investigation alone this time and would report to her superiors before taking any further action.
A Mai told them that she planned to go out and find someone. She believed that only by stirring up trouble could they have a chance to escape. A Mai suggested to Shang Yi Zhi that he could also go out and see what was happening, but Mu Bai thought that since they were targeting Shang Yi Zhi, there was no need for him to go out. A Mai reasoned that since they were pretending to come, they wouldn't dare to openly confront them even if Shang Yi Zhi went out.
A Mai sneaked into the place where the person she had found tied up was being held. She informed the person to seek out Zhang, the chief of the Long Yin Guard, and tell him that the impostors were her leaders. Due to A Mai's interference, Zhang apprehended those people. A Mai and Shang Yi Zhi prepared to say their goodbyes, and Shang Yi Zhi gave A Mai a lot of silver notes as a gesture of gratitude.
